Jennifer Lawrence found herself an instant star in the weeks following the release of The Hunger Games. She had gone from being a critically acclaimed indie movie darling in the likes of The Poker House and Winter’s Bone to becoming a heroine for teenage girls and boys alike. She’d been working hard on the publicity circuit since the beginning of the year, culminating in a worldwide tour in support of the movie (often accompanied by co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth) during the first few weeks of its release.

Jennifer had been paid $500,000 for her role in the first film and was contracted to appear in any sequels. That was a low figure for the lead in a potential franchise, but given Jennifer had never been in this position before and given Lionsgate’s strict budget control, that’s what she was offered. Although now an Oscar-nominated actress, there was no proof yet that she could ‘open’ a big blockbuster movie. After her Oscar win and several weeks of record-breaking box office for The Hunger Games, the story had changed.

The first benefit to Jennifer and her main co-stars was the activation of ‘escalators’ written into their contracts. This meant that as the box-office take climbed above certain pre-set targets, the main players would receive bonus payments. It was estimated that these ‘escalators’ could bring Jennifer an additional $1 million by the end of the movie’s theatrical run. This was a dramatic step up from the days when she was paid ‘scale’ rates (the basic wage agreed by the actors’ union) of $3,000 each week on Winter’s Bone. The initial salaries paid to Josh and Liam were not specified, but it was expected that they too would receive a boost from similar contracted escalators. Given the way the fees for the stars of the Twilight saga had ballooned across the four films, it was expected the same would be true of The Hunger Games’s central trio. Kristen Stewart had been paid $2 million for the first Twilight movie in 2008, but that had hugely increased to $12.5 million for each of the final two movies, plus 7.5 per cent of the gross box office. Her co-stars Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson had been paid $1 million for the first film, but they were on a similar rate to Stewart by the final movies.

Lionsgate, taking a leaf from the Twilight and Harry Potter playbooks, decided to split the final novel in The Hunger Games trilogy into two films, announcing in July 2012 that Mockingjay, Part 1 would be released on 21 November 2014, with Mockingjay, Part 2 following a year later on 20 November 2015. With Catching Fire announced for release on 22 November 2013 that meant there would now be a Hunger Games movie every Thanksgiving holiday for the next three years.

Jennifer’s increasingly visible quirky side, as displayed in many interviews and on late-night chatshow appearances, continued to make her new fans. She came across as a plain, down-to-earth girl who called it like she saw it and was not afraid of being candid.
