A Handbook of American Prayer by Lucius Shepard

The four of us broke into couples. The Mesa had filled up and Nancy got busy. Jerry lingered by the waitress station, watching her pour. Treat and Miss Petunia were still in their booth. She had loosened up and was laughing at things he said. Therese and I talked more about her story. “The part that’s stayed with me most,” she said, “is the place I’d float off to. It was cloudy to begin with. Just … undefined. Kind of powdery blue. Then I realized that actual clouds were drifting alongside it and I began to see pillars. Like Greek columns. A temple. Like a Maxfield Parrish place. And I’d hear voices. Whispering. I couldn’t ever understand them. It might have been the sound of a river. Of course I’m probably embellishing it in memory.”

“You go anywhere like that these days?” I asked.

“With you, you mean? I go somewhere, but it’s different.”

The four of us broke into couples. The Mesa had filled up and Nancy got busy. Jerry lingered by the waitress station, watching her pour. Treat and Miss Petunia were still in their booth.

“Different how?”

“It’s … fiercer, I guess.”

“Fierce? Like how?” I elbowed her gently in the side to let her know I was joking around.

She fanned herself with her hand, affecting a swoon. “It’s so much hotter!”

“More than you expected, huh?”

“Little more than I hoped for, anyway,” she said, and elbowed me back.

About ten-thirty, Dave Gillery, the town’s youngest deputy, a big soft-bodied kid with a crew cut, came into the Mesa and told Therese that the shop had been vandalized by somebody who owned a gray minivan. They’d been spotted driving away. We hurried over to the shop and found that an enormous red word—WAR—had been painted on one window and an equally red word with smaller letters—APOSTATE—was painted on the other.

“Treat,” I said. “That motherfucker.”

“We don’t know it was him,” Therese said.

“The son of a bitch calls me an apostate, he declares war on me. Then he shows up out of the fucking blue and sits there while a fucking minion does his dirty work. Who else you think did it?”

“You accusing somebody?” Gillery looked as if he were bursting to get all official. Dressed in khakis, slightly pear-shaped, his head only inches higher than the blinking rack of lights atop his shiny white cruiser: an alien visitor might have had difficulty deciding which was the hound and which the master.

“We don’t have any proof,” Therese said to him; then to me: “Why would he have done it? He must know he’d draw suspicion to himself?”

“Arrogance,” I said. “He wanted to watch us scurry around. It was a bad fucking move.”

“Don’t do anything! It’s not like they blew up the place. I’ll get it cleaned.”

“Naw, this guy thinks I’m a punk. He thinks he can harass me. I know how to deal with that shit.”

“Wardlin!”

“You got a suspect,” Gillery said sternly, “you lemme handle him. You don’t need this trouble, Wardlin.”

Disregarding their attempts at restraint, I set out for the Mesa at a fast clip, cold intent building with every step, the street like an art gallery whose paintings of glass storefronts were all variations on the same tawdry Christmas theme.
