Stay Humble but be Certain You Can Achieve Your Goals

Confidence is of course essential in pursuing goals, and if you have no confidence in your ability to achieve a set goal then you are almost certainly destined for failure. Indeed, confidence is implied in the SMART goal process by the very fact that the goal has been considered both Achievable and Realistic, hence you have determined that you are confident the goal can be accomplished. But where does that confidence come from?

It wasn’t until I started writing this book that I really gave due consideration to where my confidence to pursue ambitious goals originated from. On reflection I certainly wasn’t born with it, as it definitely wasn’t there at an early age. Looking back on my primary schooling I was a somewhat shy, chubby kid that due to moving schools every couple of years never really had an established group of friends. I got bullied here and there like many school kids do and as outlined in earlier chapters was profoundly average in my academic and sporting pursuits. On a positive, my regular school moves probably served to build a degree of resilience and out of necessity forced me to develop a set of social skills that allowed me to better integrate into new environments. It wasn’t until my final 18 months of high school that I recall having any real self-confidence in any facet of my life, which came through starting to win the odd running race and triathlon. At that stage I lacked confidence in my academic abilities, but my sporting wins served to bolster my overall self-confidence and represented the first examples I can recall of setting and achieving goals in my life. As I progressed on to pursuing triathlon seriously my small progressive gains in my sporting achievements allowed me to continue to gather the confidence to set more and more ambitious goals. At the same time my part-time study of university subjects that actually interested me, and that I could see the practical application for, encouraged me to exercise that muscle leading to building of confidence in the academic realm. As with my sporting confidence, my academic confidence grew over a period of years as ongoing study of subjects that I was passionate about led to better and better marks, which subsequently led to a gradual upward spiral effect of study, results, and confidence. The combination of improvements in my sporting and academic confidence fueled an improvement in my overall self-confidence and resultantly I found myself more outgoing, engaging, and personable than ever before. By the time I finished my first university degree, despite my sporting confidence taking a considerable hit with the realisation that my professional triathlon aspirations were no longer realistic, academically I had built the confidence to step up to the plate and sit the entrance exam for a graduate position in medical school. Medicine was a career that I had never even considered prior to that point in my life, there
