Caisey accepted the charges and waited.

“Special Agent Lyons?” The man’s voice was older, winded, but still had a familiar quality to it.

“Yes?”

“Thank you, Jesus.”

She frowned. When her phone said Florence, she’d assumed it would be the chaplain with another message. “Toben?”

“He has Gabe. Holden has my son.”

Caisey jumped up from her desk. “Where?”

“He said Neveya. It was a trucking company Holden and I owned. It was in Lincoln Park—” he sucked in a breath “—but that was nearly twenty years ago.”

“Give me the address.” She pulled on her jacket and saw Liam do the same. They hit the doors at a run and got in the elevator while Toben rattled off a street address. “Got it.” She hung up. “Gabe’s in trouble. His uncle is going to kill him.” Caisey’s fingers curled into fists. “I went to the cabin. I brought his uncle to him.”

Twenty minutes later Caisey pulled up outside a compound. The high fence was topped with barbed wire. She swung the car around back and parked.

“There.” Liam pointed to a gate that was open, barely.

God, please let us be on time. Don’t let him die.

They crept inside, between huge big-rigs, over to a trailer that she prayed housed the office.

Please let him be here.

She didn’t want to know what it felt. Not now that she knew he hadn’t left her again.

The hood of the Toyota outside was still warm. Caisey nodded to her partner and they crept up the ramp to the front door. Inside she could hear thuds and then a man cried out. She knew what that felt like. Wanting to get this done, she stopped beside the door and nodded to Liam.

He kicked the door in.

Gabe was on the floor with his eyes squeezed shut. The fake State Patrol officer who had brought them back to the cabin stood over him, his foot back to kick Gabe again.

It was on the tip of Caisey’s tongue to yell, “FBI!” but they weren’t there as agents. Liam planted his feet and trained his backup weapon on the guy. Caisey stuck hers in the back waistband of her jeans and grabbed the guy’s arm. His foot swung, missing Gabe, whose eyes were now open.

Caisey swung the fake trooper around, ducked her head and used his momentum to flip him on his back.

He looked up at Liam’s gun, and froze. Liam shook his head. “Don’t even think about it.”

Caisey rushed to Gabe. His face was a mess of bruises. She didn’t want to know what was going on internally. “Please don’t be dead.”

He coughed, which might have been laughter. “Hey.”

“Are you okay? Can you walk? Maybe you should stay lying down and I’ll call an ambulance.”

Liam got her attention and shook his head. Right. No one was supposed to know they were here, that way Gabe’s uncle would think—at least for a while—that he was dead.

“I thought I was dead.” He winced. “I was okay with it.”

She’d been about to haul him to his feet, but she froze. “You wanted to die?”

“I’m not saying that.
