CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

THERE WAS SOMETHING intoxicating about the right combination of lights and a beat. The music vibrated through my bones, the back of my neck was peppered with sweat and the condensation of my drink pooled on the table.

We were young and reckless. The night, the feeling of nirvana could never end. Until it did.

Her name was Grace. Named after Grace O’Malley; the pirate, The Sea Queen. So much more powerful than a dead fictional character. She was beautiful; high cheekbones, blue eyes with fiery red hair that cascaded down her back. Movie-worthy. You didn’t even have to try, jealousy was a natural reaction for every girl she met.

I only felt more entitled to my jealousy.

She had one arm slung over Lukas’s shoulders. He had a hand on her back; the same way he once guided me out of a tutoring session.

They laughed. I downed my drink.

It was a competition. I had Jason so Lukas had to have Grace. No action went unpunished in our relationship.

I grabbed my handbag. Purposeful strides carried me over to the joyous conversation happening a few paces away.

“Hello, Addie.”

“I’m leaving.” I told Lukas, my eyes never straying to the long-legged beauty beside him. Her friendliness purposefully meant to provoke.

“We’ve barely even got here.” Finally, the hand dropped away and it felt like it was mine again. The hand that pushed stray hair behind my ear, that traced shapes into my spine, slid so effortlessly between my fingers.

“Then stay if you want. I’m leaving.”

Outside it was quiet enough that I could hear him behind me and when he called to me, I stopped.

There were times when you could feel the inevitability of a fight brewing. Like static, building up; waiting for that one fatal touch.

“Why are you doing this?” He asked, stuffing his hands into his jean pockets.

“That should be my question to you.”

“You just have to make a scene. What is it, the attention, the spotlight?”

“Don’t you dare. This,” I said waving at the situation, at us “Is your fault. Don’t you dare blame it on me.”

“How is this my fault?” The perfect picture of innocence, he was.

“So that, thing, with Grace in there. That was all in my head, right?” Finger pointing; me, him, the club where Grace was. Because the fault had to be pointed out, and it laid everywhere.

“She’s a friend, Addie.”

I laughed. The winter weather made my eyes water but if I were honest, it was more than just the weather.

“So, what am I? Just a friend, because how you treat Grace and how you treat me didn’t look all that different from where I was sitting.”

“Like how you treat Jason.”

“Of course. Why does everything have to be a competition with you Lukas?”

“That’s not what this is about. It’s not a competition Addie. As per usual, you’re missing the point.”

“Don’t you get it! There is no point. There never is.” I rummaged in my purse for my phone.

“I’m going to Macy’s. So, you’ll have the apartment for yourself tonight- you could invite Grace over.
