Bouch: Through my eyes by Mark Boucher & Neil Manthorp

I have many special memories of Bouch. When he was waiting to bat against England in the Edgbaston Test and we were in a bit of trouble chasing, we needed somebody to stay with Graeme. Bouch just said to me, in his way: ‘Don’t worry, coach, I have waited too long to win a series here. I will walk off with them at the end of the game.’ And he did. Another fond memory was winning the series in Australia, and Bouch and Kallis in tears on the bus leaving the MCG – that was how much that series win meant to him.

Yes, I did always have to fight for Bouch, and I never minded that because he was worth fighting for. The reason, I think, was that he could be unintentionally divisive. I always said to him that a positive Bouch was a great lift to the team and really galvanised the side, but a negative Bouch had the ability to break the team, and I think he understood that. If he wanted to question authority, I always asked him to come and see me privately. Bouch did not suffer fools gladly, and I guess this got him into trouble a bit. If ever I wanted to implement something, I would bounce it off Bouch first, because I knew that if I had his buy-in it would make everything that much easier.

First Test at Lord’s

For all the preparation and planning, however, it still went badly wrong at the start of the first Test at Lord’s (10-14 July). The aura of the venue was something we were concerned about, especially for the first-timers. Mickey even organised for the squad to visit the ground as tourists three days ahead in order to take photographs and spend time in the change room and the famous Long Room in the pavilion. But there is nothing like a capacity crowd to provide real atmosphere. It wasn’t the same on a grey Monday with nobody there.

There had been a lot of media hype about our bowling attack, with one newspaper comparing Steyn, Ntini, Morkel and Kallis to the great West Indian pace attacks of the 1980s. It was silly. We bowled poorly and England made 600. Fortunately, they took a long time doing it and used up many overs, finally declaring shortly before the close of play on day two.

Our first-innings reply was poor. Ashwell made a gutsy hundred but there were three or four poor or careless shots played. Probably the worst came from AB who chipped a soft catch to mid on. Mickey deliberately threw protocol out of the window after the innings and had a go at most of the batsmen individually, in front of everyone else. He saved his strongest words for AB, and Graeme backed him up with a few of his own. Why target one man more than others when it was a collective balls-up? Because he was the most talented.

He didn’t take it well. He is a very proud cricketer.
