Breath of Dust & Dawn by L. Penelope

Eriq Maridall was a tall, slim fellow with an unfortunate constellation of facial hair that never quite connected. His coveralls were filthy, and he had the disconcerting habit of leaving his mouth open all the time. Jack worried something might fly in there, if the man weren’t careful. He emerged from the barn and stood next to the pen holding the underfed cow. Three barefoot children raced one another in the grassy field beyond. Once she realized Jack was not here for her, Margritt disappeared back into the house, pouting.

“Yeah, I hire grols from time to time,” Maridall said in response to Jack’s questioning. “They come cheap and work hard.” He shrugged, eyeing Darvyn distrustfully.

“But the settlers aren’t permitted to work—not for private individuals at any rate,” Jack said. The treaty allowed that special government work programs could be created to employ the men, but those had never materialized.

Maridall spat tobacco juice onto the ground. “Got more work than I can handle, is all. Figured what’s the harm in spreading it around. I don’t rightly know which one Pensar was, though.”

Darvyn tipped his head to the side. In Lagrimari he said, “He’s lying. His body temperature is rising, and his pupils shrank.”

Maridall’s gaze darted to Darvyn and back. “What’s this one here saying?”

Jack cleared his throat, his attention caught by the laundry lines with shirts, trousers, socks, and men’s drawers, strung up behind the house. He turned back to Maridall. “How many men did you hire?”

“Round about half a dozen, I reckon.”

“And how did they get out here? We’re too far from the settlement to walk.”

“I didn’t ask them about their transportation or what they had for breakfast. They showed up and I put ’em to work.”

“And you pay them?” Darvyn spoke up in Elsiran.

Maridall squinted and rubbed a hand on top of his scrubby hair. “That’s the idea, yeah.”

Darvyn shook his head almost imperceptibly. The farmer was lying again.

“How much did you pay them and how often?” Jack asked.

Maridall tensed. Jack could only imagine what Darvyn was sensing with his Song, but the farmer didn’t want to answer that question, that much was clear.

“Well, see I’d told the mouthy one that they’d get their money after harvest; that’s when I get paid. Wasn’t cheatin’, just how it is.”

“The mouthy one?” Jack asked.

“Yeah, you know. ‘My pleasure, Master Maridall’ and ‘Pleasant morning, Master Maridall’,” he said, bowing in a credible impersonation of Zimm.

“So the men understood that they wouldn’t be paid for their work for weeks?”

Maridall scratched his head. “Well that’s what I told ’em. Couldn’t say if that’s what they understood or not.”

“They ask for their wages, true?” Darvyn asked.

Maridall cut his eyes at Darvyn and pursed his lips.

“They asked for their wages and then what happened?” Jack prompted.

“Well, when I told ’em what I’d already told ’em, some of the fellas got right distressed. Shouting and carrying on. I told my oldest boy to ride for town and bring back the constable before we had a full-blown riot on our hands.
