Brunanburh: A novel of 937 (Chronicles of the English Book 1) by M J Porter

Brunanburh – Owain of Strathclyde – 937

Any moment now I know that the English will break the shield wall. The reinforcements have come and accomplished little. They can’t get to the front line because men more tired than them must hold their shields in place, and we are all too determined not to give up our places to easily hand our shields over to men who may not do the job as well as we are.

I did hear the resumption of arrows being fired, and I know that many spears have streaked through the air but it’s not been enough. Not for this part of the defense.

Behind me I feel that Ildulb draws ever nearer, I can almost feel his breath down my neck, and I’m determined that he’ll have no part to play in whatever fate I must encounter today. If he gets too close I will drop my shield and let the Englishman take me. Anything to disturb Constantin’s plans. As much as I don’t want to die at the hands of the English, I would rather die at their hands than at the hands of my supposed allies.

Even above the noise of the battle, I’m fairly confident that I know who is holding their shield against my own. Athelstan’s brother, the one I met at Eamont, the one who obscured his true place from me.

I’ve followed his career with interest, wondering if he would rise against his brother and attempt to topple him from his kingship, or whether, as I decided on that long ago day, he was an honourable man. Time has proved me right. It was the other brother, Edwin, who tried to attack Athelstan and it was Edwin who paid the ultimate price, his death at his king’s hands, as some say, whilst others say he simply met an unfortunate accident and the king had nothing to do with it. Personally I would think more of Athelstan if he had taken out the upstart. I wished I’d had that sort of courage to act when Constantin first approached me and offered me the throne of Strathclyde if I submitted to him.

If it is Edmund on the other side of my shield, I know he’ll take great pleasure in killing me. He’ll think it a great service for his king, and I’ll think it a great service simply to not die at the hands of Ildulb.

I strain to hear the conversation taking place amongst my enemy, to ensure that I’ve guessed correctly in my hope that it is Edmund. After all, the English men all sound the same, it could perhaps be anyone. But I think not. He sounds like his brother, regal and well spoken, every word weighed and tested before it’s used.

“Owain, you fight like a young boy,” is whispered in my ear, and with a start I turn and face Ildulb, his angry face barely a breath from my own. I can feel the steam from his anger in my ear, his foul breath almost enough to make me wretch.
