Chapter 29

Rhuddlan Castle was hard to miss. WPC Drake was there in a police car with her partner, PC Burns.

The castle was still imposing, even though more ruined than many Dan had seen. According to the, notices at the entrance, local groups did live performances within the castle walls; there was to be a presentation of Macbeth later in the summer.

Interesting though it was, Dan didn’t have time to linger.

“Well, we’d better get on with it.”

WPC Drake stepped forward.

“I had a thought as we were driving here, sir. My granddad has lived here all his life. He might know something.”

“Do you think he would see us?”

“I’m sure he would, sir. Shall we take you to him?”

“That would be as good a place to start as any. If he’s lived here all his life, he might know others we could ask.”

“We can leave the cars here as it’s only just a few minutes’ walk away and it’s hard to park near his house.”

The four walked down the road from the castle and along to the right. There was a row of pretty cottages, practically under the shadow of the castle.

WPC Drake knocked on the door of the first cottage. After a few moments, the door was opened by a small, plump elderly woman whose faded blue eyes twinkled as she saw who had knocked.

“Jenny! Aidan, it’s our Jenny come to see us! My, you do look good in that uniform, Cariad. Who is this with you?”

“Nanna, this is Detective Inspector Cook and Detective Sergeant Grant, from Hereford, in the West Mercia Constabulary. They are investigating some old cases and I thought Granddad might be able to help us. You know Pete, don’t you?”

“Oh yes of course, hello there, Pete, lad. Detectives? Oh my! Come away in, I daresay you could do with a cuppa? Come and meet my husband. He doesn’t walk too well, you know. He’s in here.”

The cottage had a lovely feel, warm, cosy and welcoming. Dan noticed a stair lift running along the edge of the staircase. They turned into the first door, the front living room. This was a pretty room, old fashioned with crocheted covers on the arms and backs of the chairs and a colourful rug in front of the fireplace, on which was curled a large ginger cat, who barely twitched an ear at the arrival of the newcomers.

“Aidan, bach, we have visitors! These are detectives from Hereford. Our Jenny thought you might be able to help.”

The thin elderly man sitting in the armchair, zimmer frame by his side, looked up with a puzzled expression on his face. His grey hair was in no way thinning and his face was lined and tanned like a piece of old leather. The hands that lay on the blanket showed the tell-tale signs of arthritis. However, his greeting was friendly and as warm as his wife’s.

“Come on in, sit yourselves down. I’ve never been asked to help the police before. What have I done?”

“I’m sure you haven’t done anything, sir.
