Chapter Six

The long columns of Roman legionaries and auxiliaries with Ballista batteries and elephants, the latter causing an unusual sight in the countryside of Britannia, trudged along on their way to Camulodinum. At the rear of the Dacian cavalry, Syrian archers and other auxiliaries, were architects and surveyors plotting out roads for the future. Emperor Claudius was being carried along in a slave held conveyance with a chair and covered roof. Time passed until they reached the outskirts of Camulodinum. The Romans marched into the British city and found no trace of Caratacus or his army. The few Britons that had stayed watched them in an off hand and uncaring way, knowing they could offer no resistance and had to let the new conquerors do what they liked. General Plautius took official possession.

Emperor Claudius vacated his hand held conveyance and looked around, joined by General Plautius. “This could be an important Romano-British town, big enough to carry the appropriate title of city, General,” Claudius said.

“Yes, Imperator,” Plautius replied. “Caratacus no doubt regarded it as his capital. But that notion is now well destroyed.”

“Precisely. Now I’ve come this far I think the time is fast approaching for my departure. I am grateful to have seen this new province. It looks most promising.” They were walking slowly and soon came across a vast empty place in the centre of the city. They both stopped for a moment. “This space appears to be wanting,” Claudius said, “I can imagine a forum here and at the back of that there is room for a magnificent temple that could be designated to me. A lasting memorial of my visit and celebrating the fact that I am Imperator. A basilica after an imposing entrance, and then room for a worshipping area with at the back a gigantic statue of myself holding a scroll of honour.” Claudius looked around and saw that an architect and a scribe had joined them, and the scribe was writing industriously. “Ah,” Claudius said, “good, I see my thoughts are already being noted.” Claudius then paused. “Well,” he said, “now I have not only observed your latest skirmish against this Caratacus, but, as I wanted to, seen this British city, where I’m commissioning and will be honoured with a temple. Therefore leaving my mark on this province. The Temple of Claudius will be renowned throughout this land. Though perhaps it may not be quite as large or impressive as the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus which was rebuilt by Sulla some seventy years ago in Rome. You don’t think I’m being too egotistical or presumptive do you, Aulus?”

“Not at all, Imperator,” Plautius said, though with a slightly wry smile.

Claudius then looked to the sky. “Can you hear the Gods applauding, or laughing, Aulus?” he asked.

“Neither,” Plautius replied, “for I’m sure they know you’re making the right decision.”

“You should have been a diplomat, Aulus, if I was too extreme I would be presuming to change the name of this place to Claudiopolis, surely?”

Plautius laughed. “Indeed, my lord,” he said.
