City Jitters by Christopher Fowler

Norris was pleased that he had at least had the sense not to keep his traveller’s cheques with his wallet. He could cancel his credit cards with a few telephone calls when he reached the hotel. It was his own fault, he thought as he trudged on past darkened warehouses and shuttered shops. He should have known better than to wind up in such an area in the first place. For someone employed in town planning, he sometimes showed incredible naïvity.

He had left the clip joints and dives far behind, and now found himself walking through a darker, deader part of the city. Here the streets were broad and quiet, the sidewalks gusting with litter. Crumbling storage buildings stood beside dust-caked storefronts, but above them were the gentrified loft apartments of the artistically inclined. The whole area seemed to be standing somewhere between demolition and renovation. It could go either way.

This was probably a beautiful neighbourhood once, thought Norris. Would it ever be again? An answer to this question appeared as he passed an intersection and found himself on a block consisting entirely of rubble-strewn lots and half-destroyed facades. Half a dozen ragged-coated tramps passed bottles around an oil-drum fire, even though the evening was exceedingly warm. As Norris peered into the dark corners of the lot, he could make out many more, slumped at the base of the building’s outer shell.

One of the tramps by the fire ran over to him. With the typical indecisiveness of his Libra personality, Norris remained rooted to the spot as the filthy old man flew at him.

‘Hey, buddy, you got a couple of bucks to spare for an old soldier?’ he whistled through broken teeth. He scratched the stubble on his cheeks and stared at Norris’s clothes in wonder. ‘Say, what happened to you?’

‘Somebody stole my wallet,’ Norris wearily replied. ‘I can’t give you any money.’

‘Stole your wallet?’ said the tramp. ‘Jeez, that’s terrible. You wanna hit?’ He wiped the top of the Thunderbird bottle on his coat and held it out.

‘No thank you,’ said Norris politely. ‘I just want to find the Central Hotel.’

‘Oh, that’s along here a couple of blocks. Or is that the Central Mission? Shit.’ He pulled off his battered blue baseball cap and clawed at his greasy hair. Norris found himself scratching in sympathy.

‘That’s the trouble see, Mister. I can’t remember nothing.’

‘Why is that?’

‘I’m a bum,’ shrugged the tramp. ‘What’s to remember?’

‘Well, I’m very sorry,’ said Norris, ‘but I have to be getting along.’

‘I wasn’t always a bum,’ the tramp continued. ‘Believe it or not, I used to have a regular job. I was a city planner! Hard to believe, huh? Now I’m living in derelict buildings. Guess City Hall got the last laugh on me.’ His own laugh turned into a horrible cough.

Norris had no idea what to say. He looked at the tattered man standing lost in thought before him and tried to imagine himself in the same position. At this precise moment, it was all too easy.
