Roseburg was a small town in the southwest corner of Oregon, nestled among the forests and hills and straddling both the meandering Umpqua River and the straighter strip of pavement that was Interstate 5. It was the kind of small, isolated town that so many people seemed nostalgic for these days, Captain Daniel MacMillan Hamilton thought as he flew his AV-8B Harrier II+ beneath the heavy cloud layer in a wide curve around the town. Even people who’d never lived in such a place. Especially people who’d never lived in such a place.

“Not like Yuma, eh?” the voice of his wingman, Lieutenant Carl Olsen, came in his headset. “Look at all that greenery. Bet they don’t have to limit their showers to thirty seconds a pop.”

“Probably nothing to do there but take showers,” Hamilton countered with the automatic superciliousness toward small towns that was required of someone born and raised in the heart of Manhattan. “Places like that roll up their sidewalks at eight p.m.”

Still, he had to secretly admit that growing up among all those climbing trees might have been nice.

“I could live with that,” Olsen commented. “At least for a week or two. There’s the airport—north end of town.”

“Looks like we’ve already got a crowd waiting,” Hamilton commented, peering out the cockpit at the knot of people visible at the airport’s south end. “Let’s do it.”

The airport was tiny by Hamilton’s standards—hell; by anyone’s standards—consisting of a single north-south runway and a group of hangars scattered around the southwest corner. Between the hangars and the runway was a fair-sized parking area, open in the center, with two sets of small plane tiedowns at the north and south ends.

Standing just outside the largest of the hangars, peering up at the incoming Harriers, were three men: one in civilian clothing, one in Marine dress uniform, and one in full Air Force regalia. A hundred meters south of them, clustered between the south-end tiedowns and a chain link fence and behind a red-rope barricade, were the two hundred or so curiosity seekers he and Olsen had spotted from the air. “This must be the place,” he commented, setting the Harrier into its approach and rotating the vectoring nozzles down to hover stop. “I see the Air Force is here, too. Let’s show him how it’s done.”

Hamilton was normally pretty good with his landings anyway. With Air Force brass watching, he was doubly so, and had the satisfaction of setting the Harrier down sixty feet from the hangar with hardly even a bump. Olsen, he was sure, had been just as careful.

He shut down the engine and fired up the plane’s auxiliary power unit. By the time he’d popped the canopy and climbed down, the three-man reception committee had arrived. Ducking under the Harrier’s nose, he stepped up to them and came to attention. Olsen, with perfect timing, reached his side at precisely the same time. No doubt about it, they were definitely showing the Air Force how it was done.

“Gentlemen,” he said, delivering his best parade-ground salute to the Marine major and Air Force general.
