Larson shook his head. “No, no. It’s just policy. Nothing suspicious. But, again, we need to take statements.”

Jason and Larson sipped their coffee. Blake joined out of discomfort and appreciated having something to do with her hands. Rogers observed.

“Is there anything we can do?” Blake asked.

“You have my number. We’ll be in touch if there’s information you need to know, or if we can track down the driver. Otherwise, your insurance company will have to handle the expenses.”

Rogers tilted her mug back and finished her coffee.

“For now, we’ll look into the car theft.”

Both detectives stood.

“Thanks again,” Jason said before also standing.

“We can show ourselves out, sir,” Larson said, glancing at the pills Blake had placed in front of Jason. “And thanks for the coffee.”

Minutes later, the police had left and driven away, but Jason and Blake still sat at the table. Blake’s face gave a scrunched sense of concern and fear. After a moment, Jason spoke.

“We should let the cats out of the bedroom. Now that the cops are gone.”

Blake nodded.

Jason rose and walked down the hall. He tapped the bedroom door handle, and London and Tigger barreled out. They had waited at the door, pawing the inside of it. The food and water Jason set up had been consumed in the first fifteen minutes of captivity. The empty bowls made him smile.

“So, what do you think?” Blake asked when Jason re-entered the room.

“It seems suspicious is what I kept thinking. Someone steals a tank of a car and happens to have a near-fatal car crash with us? Right when we’re going to whistle-blow about Billy’s murder. We must be getting close to something big. I always thought it had to be murder, but this is feeling bigger.”

The words hung in the air and refused to either sink in or dissipate.

“We just don’t know,” Jason continued. “It could have still been an accident. Or mistake, or drunk driving. Hopefully, we can trust the police to do a comprehensive investigation and look at every angle.”

Blake’s gaze homed in on a knot in the table’s woodgrain. “So you see this as evidence for your opinion?” she asked. There was no emotion in her voice, no tremor. She saw to that.

“My opinion?” Jason raised an eyebrow.

“RTN? Billy?”

“I guess. They asked me about everything. But I don’t know. There’s no proof it relates at all. I hope it doesn’t, actually. I don’t know what to think. I just can’t figure out why that one guy was so quiet; he was hiding something. Holding back. It’s so much, with the break-in, what we’ve had so many people hint at.”

Jason’s voice was uncertain, and his body language noncommittal. He didn’t want to offer any theories. He wanted Blake to connect the dots he thought he saw. He couldn’t trust his own perception anymore. Since the crash, he had felt ironically complete, thanks to his relationship, and he had already vowed to not jeopardize it with anymore Beached , RTN, or Billy talk. But, despite how hesitant he was, telling Blake his suspicions was fulfilling.
