Cynara by Janis Flores

Evan felt a cool hand on his forehead. Groaning, he opened his eyes to see Sarah bending over him. The room was dim, the draperies closed against the sun, but even the little light that entered hurt his eyes, and he groaned again.

“What time is it?” he muttered.

“Going on noon,” Sarah answered with a laugh. “How do you feel, love?”

How did he feel? Like his head was about to be split open. With a great effort, he managed to sit up and swing his feet over the edge of the bed. But even that small movement increased the thunderous pounding behind his eyes, and he brought his hands up to cover his face, wincing.

“Here—”

Sarah pushed a cup of strong black coffee at him, guiding it to his lips when he seemed incapable of doing so himself. The coffee was heavily laced with whiskey, and Evan turned his head away, grimacing at the sharp smell of the liquor.

“Drink,” Sarah ordered. “It will make you feel better.”

Evan complied; it was easier to obey than to resist, especially when he looked up and saw that Sarah was grinning at him. What had got into him last night? The only thing he remembered was coming here in a drunken stupor. Looking around the room now, he couldn’t even recall coming upstairs; he couldn’t remember anything after leaving the ball at Tamoora.

Evan stood up so abruptly that he staggered. His head was spinning, and the room seemed tilted to one side, but he forced himself to reach for his clothes. Thinking about Cynara was what had gotten him into this condition; he would forget her if it took every ounce of will he possessed.

But as he dressed, he found himself thinking of Cynara after all, and he was enraged all over again. He had seen her at once when he arrived. So great was his astonishment at seeing her again that he had stopped in the doorway, stunned into immobility. She was dancing with a fat, balding man who seemed unable to keep his eyes away from the deep cleavage of her gown, and her head was tilted to hear something the man said to her as he lurched around the floor. She had never seemed so desirable to him as in that moment when she tossed her head and said something in reply, and Evan felt a stirring of excitement that infuriated him.

He had watched her, wondering why she had been invited to the ball, seething inwardly at the idea that she was well enough acquainted with Thomas Hale to garner an invitation. It had been she on the street that day, he thought suddenly; how could he ever have convinced himself that he had been mistaken?

Seeing her now, managing to appear graceful in spite of the awkwardness of her partner, Evan thought cynically that she hadn’t changed at all. And yet, as he continued to stare at her, despite his efforts to tear his eyes away, he saw that she had changed a great deal.
