SIXTEEN

As April 1881 drew to a close, Dr Henry Day, the Medical Superintendent of New South Wales, had reason to be optimistic about the India’s former passengers. There had been no deaths in the past week, and most of the refugees, including the children, were on their way to a full recovery.

Giuseppe and Caterina Rossi were amongst those who were rapidly improving, and Lucio was somehow managing to hang on to life and could now take milk from a bottle. Rosa was comforted to see this – she did not want her friend to suffer as she had. But in the depths of her innermost being a little voice insisted, ‘It’s unfair. It’s so unfair! Why me? Why should my baby die and Caterina’s live?’

Rosa could think about nothing except Angelo. All day and every day she ached with a sort of madness to kiss him once more, to cuddle him in her arms, to cup his tiny pink feet in her palms, to feel the warmth of his plump little body against hers quietly suckling until he became drowsy with half-closed eyes. She recalled how he would rest his adorable head against her cushioning breast before going off to sleep and how she would then gently place him in his cradle. She rebuked herself for not having cut off some of his silky curls before his burial. At the time she had been so beside herself that she’d forgotten to do so, and thus she had no tangible relic of his life. Even the much-chewed rattle that Matteo had made for him had been lost.

That she would never see Angelo again was an unquenchable agony that sometimes made Rosa feel deranged. She would say to herself, ‘I will never again hear his little hiccups or his sweet gurgling, or see his dear little self with his blue eyes and his dimpled smile. Never, never, never.’ The hopelessness of that infinity was almost more than she could bear.

On April 22, the Italian women started being interviewed for jobs, with the assistance of Mr Stevens. At a little before ten in the morning, Rosa walked with some of her friends from the Agricultural Hall to the nearby barracks. As she went in the front gate and crossed the courtyard, she was filled with trepidation. Rosa had only ever worked on a farm, where the housekeeping arrangements were rudimentary, but she gathered that those coming to interview the Italians were seeking experienced domestic servants, nursemaids or cooks.

The young women were shepherded into a large room on the ground floor, and steered to an area behind a wide wooden counter. The person in charge was a middle-aged woman whom everyone addressed as Mrs Hicks. A great many prospective employers waited in front of the counter. They were apparently eager to obtain servants, but were also curious about the Italians and their plight, which had been covered at great length in the newspapers. As she viewed the proceedings Rosa took off her wedding ring and put it in the pocket of her dress.
