Chapter Seventeen

“I still don’t know why you insisted that I come,” Ryan’s Uncle Pauley said, his gruff voice breaking a few times before finishing the sentence.

“Because,” Ryan replied. “I didn’t wanna do this alone, and I figured you could use a few minutes away from the smoke-filled bar you live in.”

“That smoke-filled bar is my home, boy.”

“I know it,” Ryan batted back. “That’s probably half the reason you are the way you are.”

“And what way is that?”

“Broken-down health, always pissed, always coughing up a lung. Not to mention, you’re uglier than homemade sin. You look like you’ve spent the last forty years baking under the sun.”

“It’s called livin’.”

“I don’t care what it’s called. You once watched out for me, and now I’m watching out for you. Don’t make a difference to me whether you like it or not.” Ryan pulled the car into a space and tuned off the engine.

Truth be told, he was a little surprised himself. The last time he spoke with Thomas Kent, the two nearly went to blows, yet now here he was, about to get fitted for a suit so he could stand beside him at the wedding as though they were best friends. It wasn’t the first place he expected to find himself, no, but he’d told Jillian he was going to do it.

“All the people in Charleston County and he couldn’t find another fella to stand there with him?” Pauley shook his head. “Don’t say too much for his character, does it?”

“Not a lot,” Ryan replied, pulling the handle and stepping into the small room.

There were only a handful of places in Charleston Ryan Devereux had never been, and The Silk House was one of them. The building itself was large, made up mostly of a two-story bridal boutique with large picture windows and white columns. To the left of the large main doors sat another, much smaller, less ornate black door where men would go to be fitted for suits. It was a one-stop shop kind of place. One that promised to make your wedding easier by color coordinating the groom and his party to match the bride. As business models went, it wasn’t the worst idea the detective had ever seen. It was just one he didn’t see himself using anytime soon.

“Hello.” A tall, thin man said as Ryan stepped into the room. “How can I help you?”

“I have an appointment for a fitting,” Ryan said.

“For which wedding?” the man asked, leaning in just a bit, his hands behind his back. His movements were quick and steady, his eyes and neck snapping with every word. He looked to Ryan like a caricature of himself, in a way. Almost as if a man had been born, then suddenly replaced with an animated version as he stepped through the door to his work.

“Thomas and Jillian Kent,” Ryan said, realizing that was the perhaps the first time he’d heard Kent placed at the end of his ex-wife’s name. He honestly didn’t much care for the way it sounded.
