“He’s in there,” Tax confirmed. “And he reeks of demon.”

I cocked my head to the side from my perch on the balcony’s railing. “Isn’t that a bit like the pot calling the kettle black?”

The Tracker frowned. “Did you hit your head on the way up here?”

“He’s in there,” Tax confirmed. “And he reeks of demon.”

I cocked my head to the side from my perch on the balcony’s railing. “Isn’t that a bit like the pot calling the kettle black?”

The Tracker frowned. “Did you hit your head on the way up here?”

“It’s a humanism, recent too,” Xai explained. “She’s teasing you for criticizing your own kind.”

“By referring to me as a…” He trailed off with a shake of his blond head. “Never mind. Do you two need me for anything else, or can I take the rest of the night off?”

“Can you tell which demon aura clouds him?” Xai asked.

“No, but it’s fresh from Hell and unfamiliar.”

“Then enjoy your night off,” Xai replied.

Tax gave us a mock salute and fell backward off the balcony into a somersault. When he landed on his feet, two stories below, I smirked. “The demon actually has some skill.”

“Why do you think we’re friends?” Xai combed his fingers through his windswept hair and gave me an amused look. “How do you want to play this, darling?”

I thought he’d never ask. “Surprise party.”

“Through the glass?”

“Absolutely.”

He gestured at the veranda overhead. “Ladies first.”

I stood on the railing’s ledge of our room’s balcony and jumped up to grab the landing above me before pulling myself upward. Xai joined me a half a second later, pleasure evident in his expression.

“Enjoying the view?” I whispered.

“Always.”

“Then you’re going to love this.” I brushed a kiss over his stubbled jaw and sauntered over the marble surface toward the glass doors.

The bright interior lights cast me in shadows outside, something that worked to my advantage. Streator sat at the table with an expensively dressed businessman to his right. They appeared to be engaged in a heated discussion, while Streator’s oblivious bodyguards watched television from the couch several feet away.

I sighed when I realized the door wasn’t even locked.

No challenge whatsoever.

How boring.

I wandered over to the opposite side of the oversized patio and peered into the darkened bedroom. Empty, and another unsecured entry.

I shook my head in disgust.

Streator needed to hire more-efficient henchmen. Being on the twenty-fifth floor did not translate to security. Even scrawny mortals could scale balconies. Idiots.

I slid the door open and stepped inside, while Xai leaned against the brick banister of the balcony with his legs crossed at the ankles and his hands in his pockets. He winked as I closed the glass. A way of reminding me he was there if I needed him, but we both knew I didn’t.

The master suite rivaled the one Xai and I shared last night, but the stench of cigar smoke spoiled the elegant atmosphere. Sex mingled in the air, suggesting Streator had taken a woman to bed last night, or perhaps even today.

Something spicy and familiar taunted my senses, but I couldn’t place it—a feminine perfume of sorts, overbearing and flowery.

I explored the other two bedrooms in the suite and found an array of weapons that I disabled. The bodyguards would never have a chance to go for them, but precautions never hurt anyone.
