HYPOTHESIS

Clovis looked at the calendar: it was seventeen years and three months since he had left India with Pops for London. Pops was still there, for several years with Ana Maria who he described as a ‘British lady’. Originally Brazilian, she came to England to work as a highly paid simultaneous translator and had recently become a British national. She had the kind of generous disposition and build that made Pops easy to live with, despite their different backgrounds.

In the busy three years since Clovis returned to India to start the Sunrise Software India operation, he thought sometimes of what he had left unfinished with Rani. He wondered if he should go and see her, then wavered, feeling things might best be left as they were. She had never reached out to him and must have put the period away in her past. What would he gain by seeing her? What sort of resolution could there be?

And then he found her name in the newspapers, victim of a ‘passion spat’ with a student. It had all the ingredients for days of tabloid speculation. Eventually, the news died out for lack of anything new or anyone to interview. Her murder had been explained by the police and there were no unanswered questions. ‘It must have been him,’ the newspapers said of the student and left him to face what their readers were sure was the right penalty for craving what he must not have.

Yet it could not have been the student. It is not easy to force a jaw up long enough to find and sever a major blood vessel in the neck; it would be impossible for an epileptic to do it. Clovis knew there must be others like him who were convinced of this.

He was thinking of Inspector Suryaprakash when his son Sujit walked in to his office looking chastened and dropped into a chair.

‘Have you come to learn?’ Clovis asked.

Sujit nodded glumly. Clovis had told Anuja Apte about training him. She came in, gave Sujit a cold glance and said, ‘Follow me.’

Anuja was taller and had an unusually severe expression. Sujit stepped in line behind her, sullen-faced, head down, shoulders slumped. He had asked to be trained and now seemed apprehensive at what might follow.

Anuja was clearly the team leader, not just the primus inter pares. The men put heads down and buried themselves deep in the programs they were writing, escaping from the real world into a fantasy of their own. The women were more cautious and often more observant: they were less willing to lose themselves in program detail and better at understanding how things fitted together. Anuja was unusual in being able to see the system as a whole, and how the smallest detail in someone’s program could affect it. She would tell each programmer what to test and often help to discover errors long before the system was integrated. There were a few men and women who modelled themselves on her but none could match her sharp analytical abilities.
