‘Los Angeles?’ Billy moaned. ‘Tonight? Damn, I just did a job. No, I’m not afraid of burning out. I usually get a little more time between assignments though. I got a life too, you know.’

He had been hoping to take a short vacation. What good was all the money if he didn’t have the time and opportunity to spend it?

‘Los Angeles?’ Billy moaned. ‘Tonight? Damn, I just did a job. No, I’m not afraid of burning out. I usually get a little more time between assignments though. I got a life too, you know.’

He had been hoping to take a short vacation. What good was all the money if he didn’t have the time and opportunity to spend it?

‘I appreciate that,’ he said, reacting to the compliment he was being given over the phone. ‘I understand.’ He could hear the veiled threat sliding over the words like insulation over a wire. Any time they wanted, they could reach out and snuff him like someone smothering a small campfire. He would go up in smoke and be just as gone and forgotten.

‘No, it’s not going to be a problem,’ he said, now trying to sound enthusiastic. ‘What are the details?’ He pulled his notepad closer. ‘Yeah,’ he said, writing. ‘I thought it never rains in Southern California. Don’t you believe in the song?’ The lack of an appropriate response wiped the smile off his face. No one had a sense of humor. ‘Right. I’m on my way,’ he said and cradled the phone. He looked at what he had written, committed it to memory, and then put the paper in the shredder.

He thought about packing a carry-on and then decided the hell with it. This was supposed to be an overnight, and if it turned out to be longer, he’d just buy anything and everything he needed. After all, the weaponry was waiting for him. What else did he really require?

He called for a cab and then stood at his large living room window and looked out at the blue waters in the bay. He could see his boat moored at the dock. Memories of his last trip on it rushed up and into his high-tower apartment. He had picked up the girl at a South Beach bar. She had just come to Florida from some small town in Ohio and was a dancer at a strip joint. He overwhelmed her with his compliments and his promises to get her into something better, like a television soap opera.

Young women were so vulnerable, he thought, so desperate for fame. It was almost too easy. He had gotten his patter down to perfection. The dialogue made him feel like he was in a movie again. He was always in a movie. None of this was real. Someday, the projector would shut down and he would find himself sitting in a chair and realize he had been dreaming.

He thought about the last girl again. He was on holiday, he told her. He came from New York, where he had a Manhattan penthouse and produced network daytime television. He was using a friend’s apartment and boat because the friend was in Europe cruising the Med on his own yacht. He didn’t have time to go along, so his friend made the offer and he accepted.

‘Sometimes,’ he told her with a deep sigh, ‘I wonder if all the money and the power is worth it.
