Death at Ivy House: An utterly gripping English cozy mystery (A Sukey Reynolds Mystery Book 5) by Betty Rowlands

Trevor Blackton sat on his bed with his feet up, an open six-pack and a supply of crisps on a table at his elbow, a half-empty can in one hand and the remote control of the TV in the other.

‘Bleedin’ load of rubbish!’ he muttered as he flicked through a score of channels. He lingered briefly on a pornographic film, the kind he and Evie would have enjoyed together, but switched off after a couple of minutes, overcome with emotion at the recollection of his last sight of her. ‘I loved that chick!’ he sobbed. ‘Why’d she have to do that to me after all I done for her?’

He gave himself up to self-pity for several minutes before emptying the can and cracking open another. He undid a packet of crisps, consumed the contents in a few mouthfuls and tossed the wrapper on the floor, where it joined the accumulated debris of a succession of interminable days.

For almost two weeks now he’d been cooped up in this house, not daring to show his face outside the door yet resisting the advice of friends who offered to help him skip the country while he had the chance. ‘Not till I’ve laid my hands on the bleeder who stole my Evie!’ he declared every time the subject was raised. ‘If you useless wankers would get off your arses and find him for me, I’d be on the plane the minute I’d dealt with him.’ They pointed out that the police were looking for the aforesaid ‘bleeder’ as well, considering him to be a valuable witness who could help them with their enquiries into Evie’s murder, but he refused to listen. At first, that is. After almost a fortnight of skull-cracking boredom in an abandoned, boarded-up house that had been left derelict for years, he found himself dreaming of some sunny resort in Spain teeming with sexy, dark-eyed crumpet that would help him forget Evie. His boys had done their best to make him comfortable; somehow they’d laid on electricity and water and sneaked in after dark from time to time with essential supplies, but the place was still a pigsty, only made tolerable by a limitless supply of booze. Maybe it was time to cut his losses and get out.

The quantity of lager he had consumed that morning was having an effect. Muttering to himself, he swung his feet to the floor and staggered to the bathroom. He was already half drunk and still hungover from the previous night; it was several seconds before he realised that the pounding he could hear above the sound of the cistern flushing was not inside his head, but coming from downstairs. From the front door, to be precise, accompanied by shouts of ‘Police! Open up!’

This was the nightmare scenario he had been dreading. He lurched into the bedroom and peered out through a crack in the tattered curtains. Yes, there they were, the bastards. Dozens of them, swarming round the house like a plague of locusts.
