Death by Diploma: Chalkboard Outlines, #1 by Kelley Kaye

In the middle was the stuff from the cigar box: a couple of letters, a mini notepad, and a small key, all of which Emma was ecstatic about. Love letters! How romantic. Never mind that they hadn’t actually read them yet; she just knew they were love letters. Maybe that notepad was Melvin’s little diary, plus a key with no lock in sight! They had an honest-to-goodness Nancy-Drew-would-be-proud mystery on their hands if there ever was one, and they knew if they had this information, then Carl Niome, kindergarten cop, did not.

At that thought, Emma stopped organizing. “Do y’all think we should give this to that police investigator? I mean, they might be able to make better use of it.”

“ Y’all would think so, wouldn’t you? But I keep going back to the ‘alleged’ murderer kid with blood on his shirt, the one Niome sent home, then I feel confident it should remain right here on my kitchen island.” Leslie waved at the piles. “Besides, do we not have the inside track with all the people at school? I’m sure we can finagle information out of Edward with much more finesse than the police could if they barged into his territory.”

“Yes, if he doesn’t kill us in the process!” Emma said indignantly. “Don’t forget, you think Edward could be a murderer. Mur. Der. Er. If he can bonk someone as big as Melvin over the head and kill him, he could probably hack us into teeny pieces without even mussing his Alfalfa hair.”

“Shhhh,” Leslie soothed. “We know how to deal with Edward. We won’t piss him off, that’s all. We won’t do anything to make him go over to the dark side.”

“Oh, yes, of course.” Emma threw her hands in the air. “I can see your point. Asking him if he killed someone won’t set him off whatsoever. Forget Shakespeare, Les. As Charlie Brown would say—good grief!”

Leslie walked over to Emma and patted her back just like a darn kindergarten teacher would. Don’t worry. Pat, pat. I know what I’m doing. Pat, pat. Smile and nod. Pat, pat.

It was completely infuriating, but she had to admit Leslie had been able to control the situation so far, and Emma really didn’t know Edward that well. The patting calmed her, annoying and condescending as it was, so she went to the stack of letters. The envelopes had a slight patina of age and were addressed in flowing calligraphic letters “To Mickey,” with a Pennsylvania address. They had all been stamped “forward” many times, looking like much-traveled passports. The flaps were soft and worn, as if they had been opened and reopened.

Emma was gentle as she pulled out the letter inside, feeling as if something historical was unfolding.

Dear Mickey,

I think of you often. Every time I’m someplace where the lights whirl or the music twirls me like a little child, I think of you. Sometimes all it takes is a kaleidoscope of the noises around me, and if there are many and they are varied, I feel like I am back with you.
