THE PEOPLE’S CHURCH

While roughly 75 percent of Danish people belong to the Folkekirke, or “People’s Church,” an Evangelical Lutheran denomination, less than 5 percent are regular churchgoers. The Church is state-supported, with a minister in cabinet and government funding. The monarch or head of state is the only person in Denmark obliged to be a member of the Folkekirke. The Folkekirke has a special place in the Danish constitution, the Grundlov. Article 4 of the Grundlov states that, “The Evangelical Lutheran Church shall be the Established Church, and as such shall be supported by the State.” Article 66 states, “The constitution of the Established Church shall be laid down by statute.” There exists therefore a unique official relationship between Church and state in Denmark. That said, however, the Church has very little relevance to Danes in their daily lives. It is said that the average Dane attends church four times—to be baptized, confirmed, married, and buried.
