Dracula’s Children by R. Chetwynd-Hayes

Mr Lloyd never came back and one day Mary read in the local paper that he had been killed in a car crash. She knew that the men who looked like giant dogs wearing broad-brimmed hats had something to do with that crash and wondered how they managed it. Probably made the poor man so frightened he didn’t see where he was driving. Which must be taken as a dire warning; let Zena get on with whatever she was doing to poor Edward without interference.

So Mary kept herself to herself, cooked quite tasty meals in the kitchen and got quite used to leaving two full plates outside that bedroom door, then retreating downstairs.

Strangely she was not unhappy during this period, for money was no problem, not even if they stopped Edward’s salary, for she had her own small income that had hardly been touched in twenty years.

She began to understand as time passed that Edward had been rather a nuisance, an encumbrance who stopped her sinking into a cosy pit of idleness, coloured by reading nice books from the library and watching the better kind of TV programmes. This did not mean of course that she was totally unconcerned as to what might be happening to him, and when Zena came out for one of her by now rare lap-sitting sessions, she questioned her about his well-being.

‘Now, Zena, you must tell me truly, like the good little girl I try to think you are.’ Zena giggled softly and Mary tried to feel angry. ‘As I indeed hope you are — how is your Uncle Edward?’

Another giggle, but now it sounded more like a gargle, followed by a really ambiguous statement.

‘He’s coming along nicely.’

‘That’s no answer at all. Now, I mean this. I’m coming into see him this very afternoon and if he’s not spruce, bright-eyed and happy as a sand boy, I will want to know the reason why.’

Zena traced a line with her forefinger down Mary’s cheek and as this evoked a tickling sensation, she had great difficulty in not giggling herself. Then the rosy-lipped mouth sort of blew words at her.

‘You don’t really and truly want to see Uncle Edward. Not really and truly. ’Cause he’s not all that nice to look at. And,’ now the soft fingers were doing something to Mary’s left ear and she felt like purring, ‘and … and sooner neither will I, for a little while. You see Uncle Edward’s got something that I — and Great-Uncle Manfred and Great-Aunt Matilda — have been looking for — oh — a very long time. Not that Great-Uncle Manfred and Great-Aunt Matilda want his special something for themselves — mocks don’t — but because they are worried about me. Not growing up as I should. They hate leaving me to cope on my own, but it’s their sleeping time.’

‘You’re talking silly again,’ Mary said with little conviction. ‘I’ve told you about it before.’

The lilting voice lost its childish quality and became mature, cold — menacing.

‘Dear, dear Aunt Mary, you will not see me again for quite a while.
