In 1807 Parliament passed the first laws to regulate factory working hours and conditions. These proved entirely ineffectual. In same year Parliament also abolished the slave trade – definitively.

WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST!

In February 1852 HMS Birkenhead, an early iron-hulled vessel, was taking reinforcements to South Africa. Drawn from ten different regiments, with the largest contingent coming from the Black Watch, many were new recruits. Most of their women and children disembarked at Cape Town but 13 remained on board for the last leg of the journey.

On 25 February the ship struck an uncharted rock, smashing a massive hole in her hull. A hundred men drowned where they slept. Those who made it on deck rushed to man pumps and ready lifeboats only to find just two seaworthy. Within minutes the ship’s back broke, sinking the front section. The surviving soldiers mustered in ranks on the rear section. Fearing a general rush might swamp the women and children’s boat, Colonel Seton, the officer commanding, ordered the men to ‘stand fast’. They did.

Six weeks later the Illustrated London News reported that, ‘the coolness and steady obedience to order which the troops manifested on that awful and trying occasion present an instance of one of the noblest results of discipline.’

Most of the soldiers died – from drowning or sharks. Dozens swam ashore, two miles away; about 60, clinging to masts and rigging, were taken off by a rescue ship. As the muster rolls went down with the ship the number lost has never been exactly established. The original complement was about 640; fewer than 200 survived.

The event had an effect around the world. In London, Queen Victoria ordered a memorial for the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. King Frederick William of Prussia had an account of the men’s bravery read out to every regiment in his army. A mountain and a river in British Columbia were named after the Birkenhead. And even 40 years after the incident, Thomas M. Hemy’s painting The Wreck of the Birkenhead was widely popular as a print, reproduced in many schoolbooks.
