Chapter 19: Unexpected Rescue (Tal)

There was no question that Nurse Florence and I were royally screwed.

I had hoped that the chain shackling me to the ground might have some flaw. After all, New Dark Me had to have produced it very rapidly. Surely it could not really be 100 percent effective. There had to be a weakness, right?

Chapter 19: Unexpected Rescue (Tal)

There was no question that Nurse Florence and I were royally screwed.

I had hoped that the chain shackling me to the ground might have some flaw. After all, New Dark Me had to have produced it very rapidly. Surely it could not really be 100 percent effective. There had to be a weakness, right?

Wrong! I had seen such chains in Ceridwen’s dungeon, which meant that Dark Me had seen them, too. If I could see something as unusual as the awakening spell cast once and then be able to cast it myself, I shouldn’t have been surprised by Dark Me’s ability to recreate magic chains he had only seen once. He was as good as me because, well, he was me.

That didn’t prevent me from trying everything I could think of, including, despite my aversion to shape-shifting, changing my form enough to shift the chain off my ankle. Nothing worked. I continued to be able to sense the magic in the links, but that was the only magical operation I could perform. The chain blocked everything else.

I couldn’t see Nurse Florence, trapped on the ground as I was trapped on the throne platform, but we were close enough to hear each other, so I was able to verify that she was just as stuck as I was.

A terrible thought occurred to me. Since time flowed faster here than in the “real” world, what if New Dark Me forgot about that discrepancy, and Nurse Florence and I were dead of thirst by the time he came back?

“Are you serious?” thought Old Dark Me from somewhere deep inside my mind. “You wouldn’t forget that, so why would he? And if he’d wanted to kill you, you’d both be dead.” Apparently the chain did not interfere with my attempt to talk to “myself,” though I figured it would inhibit any move by Old Dark Me to take over.

“Look!” Old Dark Me tried to get my attention, probably because I hadn’t responded. “If we are going to get through this, there’s one thing you need to know: I’m on your side…for the moment.”

I snorted derisively. “Since when?”

“Since that faerie idiot cloned you—and me,” he replied bitterly.

“I would have thought you would be rooting for him,” I thought back. I didn’t really want to talk to him, but it occurred to me I might get some insight about New Dark Me, and it wasn’t as if he was taking me away from something else.

Old Dark Me sighed. “I don’t see why so many people strive to be good when apparently all it does is make them stupid. Think, Tal! What have I always wanted?”

I didn’t have to think long about that. “Control, power!”

“Exactly!” he replied. “And what do you suppose he wants?”

I had a light bulb moment. “The same thing!”

“You’d get a gold star for that…if it hadn’t taken you so long to get there,” thought Old Dark Me sarcastically. “We both want total control, but neither one of us can have it while the other exists.
