CHAPTER 16

The disruptor who’d been shot never had a chance—the rifle bullet had hit him squarely in the sternum, ripping through his rib cage and the organs underneath. While none of the other injured fighters on either side were critical, there were far too many to fit in our lone SUV. So, even as we frisked them, read them their rights, and zip-tied their hands, Simon radioed for ambulances.

When the paramedics arrived and began carting people away, Simon insisted on riding in the back of an ambulance with Hartley, leaving Devers and me to search the Green Way’s camp before meeting her at the hospital. With borrowed red-lensed flashlights to preserve our night vision, we set off into the forest in the direction from which the disruptors had made their charge.

We came upon the camp quickly—it was staged in a shallow cut a few hundred yards beyond where the fight had broken out. Sunken several feet below the surrounding terrain, the camp was hidden until you stood on the lip directly above it. Within the hollow, the camp’s arrangement resembled the one we’d seen earlier: concentric rings of smaller shelters surrounding a larger central tent. Although the place appeared deserted, campfires still smoldered in their pits.

Dousing our lights, Devers and I silently agreed to split up. He disappeared into the brush to our left, while I bore right.

As I worked my way along the lip of the berm, I yanked the earpiece out of my ear and stuffed it down into my pocket. I had enough adrenaline pumping that I could hear my heart pounding in my chest. All my muscles felt extra twitchy.

Once I was within a few yards of the first perimeter tent, I eased onto all fours. My broken ribs didn’t appreciate that, but I tried to ignore the stabbing feeling in my side. The leaves littering the ground felt cold and slick against my hands; their sweetly rotting smell pushed its way up my nose and stayed there.

I trained my eyes on the dark arch of canvas ahead and crawled forward. Nothing moved. No signs of life at all.

Identifying the gentlest grade down to the camp floor, I inched toward it. Rocks and roots pressed into my palms and knees, the brush scraped my bare scalp and cheeks, but eventually I reached the slope and crept down the earthen hill as silently as I could. Once I reached the small tent, I drew the Sig in my right hand and seized the flap zipper with my left.

After a cleansing breath, I yanked the zipper down and pushed my way inside in a single motion.

Empty. Although whoever had occupied the tent hadn’t had time to clear out their belongings. In addition to an unrolled sleeping bag, a rucksack leaned against the fabric wall, and the contents of a toiletry kit were scattered across the floor.

Over the next few minutes, I popped into a dozen tents in the outer rings and each time found an identical result: the camp was abandoned.
