Chapter Thirty-Three

Zerlina’s words came true sooner than either she or Deidre had feared. Deidre was pushed forward by a Viking she did not know to hear the charges against her.

Wolfram had seen little of Deidre before they set off upon the journey to the assembly, but he had tried with all his power to find any witnesses who could attest to her innocence. So far he found only those who felt her guilty, and Wolfram had become even more convinced that it had been by Deidre’s hand that Maddock had escaped. Even so, he would do all within his power to see that her punishment was minimal.

At the sight of Wolfram’s wound Deidre forgot for the moment her own plight, but when the lawgiver stepped forward her fears returned.

“Since no witnesses have spoken for you, it has been determined that you be given the chance to prove your innocence by ordeal,” he said loudly for all to hear.

“No!” Wolfram stepped forward, holding Deidre’s eyes with his own. He could not bear to see her suffer the hot stones. Blood seeped from the linen around his wound, and he winced at the pain his movement had caused.

“It has been decided,” the lawgiver said beneath his breath angrily.

“I will be brave no matter what the punishment may be,” Deidre vowed beneath her breath.

“Do you wish to avoid this trial?” the lawgiver asked Deidre, unnerved by Wolfram’s actions. Seeing the scorn in the lawgiver’s eyes, Wolfram stepped back.

Deidre knew in her heart that this was the only way. She was not guilty; surely if she had faith it would be proven. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Wolfram step forward, only to be intercepted by Olaf. She heard him arguing with his father, telling him to stop the ordeal, but Olaf argued that it was Deidre’s right. Matters had progressed too far for them to back out now.

“Do you wish a trial by ordeal?” the lawgiver repeated, irritated by the disturbance.

“Yes,” Deidre said with conviction. “Let it be proven that I am innocent of these charges. I did not release my kinsman from his bondage though I abhorred his being made a slave. Nor did I open Wolfram Olafsson’s storehouse. Let it be so proven this day.” She managed to speak in a calm, clear voice despite the trembling of her hands.

“Since this is the day of Odin, god of wisdom, so be it,” ordered the lawgiver. He commanded that several stones be cast into the fire. Deidre flinched as she imagined the agony they would cause. Her eyes darted again and again to the fire.

When the stones were red hot, they were picked up with a long metal spoon to be thrust into Deidre’s hand. She winced, clenching her jaw tightly to keep from crying out aloud.

Wolfram felt as if the stones were being placed into his own hand. “How could I have let her suffer so,” he moaned, feeling anger at himself for his foolish pride. He would never be able to make up for the pain she was now suffering, he thought.
