No Such Thing

The man was standing in front of the supermarket, right next to the carts, clipboard in hand. The rain had slowed to a drizzle, but it was still a dark, dank, cold day, and he wore only a light jacket under his plastic raincoat.

“Please sign,” he said, pushing the clipboard into my hands.

The petition was addressed to the President of the United States, the Governor of Texas, and the Mayor of Austin and read: “We, the undersigned, demand that you take immediate action to rid this country of vampires.”

I handed the petition back to him, unsigned. “There’s no such thing as vampires.”

“That’s what they want you to think,” he said. He pulled something from his inside jacket pocket. “Here. Read this.”

“This” was a sheet of paper listing unverified and unverifiable vampire sightings, quoting from the Bible, and blaming lax immigration polices for an “epidemic” of vampires. It included lots of bold type, but otherwise had none of the bells and whistles of modern desktop publishing. I suspected he’d turned it out on a public library computer.

I gave that back, too. The library charges ten cents a page for printouts, and he didn’t look like he could afford to spend that too often.

“There’s no such thing as vampires,” I said, leaning in to get a good look at him. He was somewhere between forty and sixty, with washed-out eyes and a dead-earnest expression on his face—your classic streetcorner nutjob. He probably lived alone somewhere in a basement efficiency. If he hadn’t been out campaigning against vampires, he might have been crusading to put God back in the schools or to abolish the IRS.

“Just keep believing there aren’t vampires, and one of these mornings you’ll wake up dead,” he told me as I walked away.

He quit soliciting people an hour or so before the store closed, and trudged to his car—a rusted sedan parked in the far corner of the lot. I grabbed him as he put his key into the lock and went straight for his jugular, not stopping to make conversation. I don’t like to play with my food.

No, he’s not going to wake up dead. A nutjob vampire? Can you imagine the attention he would draw?
