BAPTISTA LYNCH, URSULINE CONVENT, COLUMBIA, S.C., TO PATRICK LYNCH, AUG 29TH15

Mrs Aveilhé very kindly offers to be the bearer of my letter which I will take advantage of, to tell you all the news (Don’t you admire this blockade paper? I have just laid in a supply & can give you some when you come up)

To begin with our school,—we cannot be sufficiently grateful, for the success which attended our religious instructions of last year, & the effects of it on our pupils, when at home—consequently we have a good many new applications from others for circulars, & seemingly, may expect a full school, though not at the opening—

We have also had more applications of day scholars, among whom are the daughters of Z.B. Baker of Charleston & of Mr. Bardell of the Bank, to whom you recommended our school. J. S. Ryan Broker, will send his daughter as a boarder. We expect two more from Richmond—one is Miss Dooley.16 What do you think[?] Anna Davis has been baptized since her return home by Bishop McGill! Most of our old boarders write most gratefully & affectionately, & are anxious to return & those in the house are “as happy as larks.”

So far for the Academy, now for the teachers, of which we want more. We are generally thank God very well & strengthened by our retreat to renew our labors A.M.D.G.

I wrote to Francis a few days since, requesting him to call on Revd Father Mulvey,17 when on his way to Richmond, & let him know the time of his return & that he would take Miss Jones under his protection to Columbia—I told him he would oblige both you & myself, by so doing if not inconvenient—I hope my letter was in time….

Today, Sr Charles got a letter from her brother who mentioned a “Miss Fannie Fennell” who is from Florida, & whose father is in the Navy department, saying, she is an earnest practical Catholic, & very anxious to know her vocation for the religious life. He seems very much taken with her.

I told Sr. C___ to write to her & invite her to spend a few days of retreat in our Convent. Have you any objection? …

We have just concluded our arrangements of Mistresses for the different classes, and hours. I do not know how we shall manage for books, although we did not allow any of our pupils to carry theirs away at the close of last session. If you could lend us a “Gazeteer”—“Encyclopedia” or any other reference books for teachers, we would be most grateful. “Fellers Dictionary” is another work I covet. We would be very much obliged also, if you could lend us some travels, such as “Laird Pattersons travels to the Holy Land” “Hue’s Travels in India” “Taylor’s voyage around the world” &c &c or others that you may have—this sort of reading is very necessary for days or hours of recreation, as well as during sewing classes on Saturday, when one reads aloud for all who are engaged in needle-work.
