I’m frozen to the spot with the glass in my hand watching helplessly as Caleb punches Jace in the head so hard he goes down. I’m unable to move, and I’m trembling so much the water is spilling over the edge of the glass and onto my hand. I want to help Jace, but with Caleb in such a fury I’m scared to even breathe in his direction. He kicks Jace’s unconscious form hard enough in the side that I know he’ll have a bruise, at the very least, tomorrow.

Caleb looks at me; his expression is hard and contorted with rage. When he sees the glass in my hand and reaches for it, I immediately hand it to him. He tips the water over Jace, the coldness shocking Jace’s senses and forcing him back into consciousness. Jace groans in pain while presumably trying to work out what happened.

“Wake up, little brother.” Caleb’s voice is so cold I can’t help but shiver.

I bite my lip, wanting Jace to be okay but trying not to reveal my feelings to either of them. I don’t want to be here anymore, and I haven’t for a long time. Jace’s eyes are unfocused for a moment, but when they clear he focuses on me. Caleb kicks him again, and he yells out in pain.

Turning around, I go back into the toilet and shut the door before putting my hands over my ears. I don’t want to see or hear any of this, and I won’t be a part of it. I’m so useless; I couldn’t see what Caleb was really like, and now I’m trapped here.

Aunt Sarah doesn’t want me; she’s always hated me, especially after she lost my dad. Caleb seems to hate me most days, and now I’m carrying Caleb’s baby, Jace will probably hate me too. I deserve all of this.

Caleb and Jace shout, and I wrap my arms around myself as I start to shake, wishing and waiting for them to stop. Their voices grow fainter, and guessing that they must have moved elsewhere in the house, I open the door and leave the room. I make my way back into the kitchen, pour myself a glass of water, and go back to Caleb’s bedroom.

As I pass the living room, I can hear Caleb’s harsh voice snarling something at Jace and the sound of flesh on flesh as he’s hitting him again. Caleb only brought me down for breakfast to torture Jace, no doubt, and now he is punishing Jace for his act of kindness toward me. Right now, all I want to do is sleep, hoping, like always, that when I wake this nightmare will have been nothing more than a terrifying dream.

I’m woken up by the bed shifting, but when I open my eyes and see Caleb, I just want to close them again. Even the regular nightmares I suffer from when I manage to fall asleep are preferable to reality these days. Just as he’s been doing every
