Five

Apollonius rubbed his eyes and sat up on the marble block. The town was still too quiet for an early afternoon. The birds had gone silent again. The tenor of the voices in the distance still didn’t sound quite right, but having a teenage son – a boy he had come to think of as his son – had been making Apollonius too paranoid of late.

He shuffled his legs to the side of the block and lowered his weight gingerly onto his feet. He called out for Myron, but received no answer. The boy should have returned from the market by now.

He knew that he shouldn’t worry as much as he did. He tried not to. Granted, the lad had gotten himself into a couple of brushes with the authorities recently and had experienced a few close scrapes with some rougher types, but it was nearly always due to having spoken the truth, if injudiciously. Courage to speak the truth, and forthrightly, could only be judged as a virtue, but judiciousness in the use of one’s tongue was also of much value, particularly for a youth of Myron’s age, particularly if he wanted to survive intact to adulthood. Apollonius was trying to teach Myron discretion, but Myron was at a stage in which he saw hypocrisy, injustice and stupidity at every turn, and his indignation was a fiery, spirited horse yet to be bridled – likely he would continue to test the patience of others before achieving the prudence of maturity. It could only be hoped that any lessons the young man had yet to learn wouldn’t be too painful or costly.

The old sculptor looked around the yard. He knew each scrap of stone, each chipped slab and busted block, which piece had been part of which project and when. Would he miss this place? He knew he would. Though much pain had been endured here in the beginning, more joy had followed. The limestone rabbit and the fox now lived on opposite ends of the shelf above the workbench inside. The portrait Myron had carved that night had found a home on the mantel above the hearth. While his visage in marble had darkened over the years from the smoke and soot, Apollonius’s own days had continued to brighten. Since Myron’s appearance at his side on that black night, the days and years had passed quickly, too quickly really, and there was little in the world that still bothered him. There was no changing the past and no value in bemoaning it – he was doing what he loved to do, as well as he could do it. Life was being lived and lived well, all things considered.

Yet there was still the one thing undone. Where once lay two blocks of marble, there remained the one.

He looked at his hands, opening them, turning them over, extending his fingers as far as he was able. The joints were becoming more gnarled, knobbed, less flexible with each passing year. With his eyesight dimming, he wondered how much time he had left.
