The End

Epilogue

Vireo sighed as he walked down the street, entirely oblivious to the stares his strange and greenish features got him. Things were going very well between him and Kojata, but when the human had gotten out of bed that morning his back was stripped with angry red marks from Vireo’s nails. Kojata would never say anything, of course, and Vireo couldn’t help getting so enthusiastic, but still he hated that he hurt his lover so.

The End

Glancing up when one of those particularly large monsters—cars, Kojata called them, although he’d had another term for the really big ones only Vireo couldn’t remember it—passed by, a sign caught Vireo’s eye.

‘Get the nails you’ve always wanted,’ it read, ‘Manicures only $19.99.’

The funny ‘S’ was a—a—maybe Vireo forgot that word, too, but it meant the number was money. Vireo didn’t have any money, but Kojata had given him a funny blue card and told him to use it whenever money was required. Kojata had also explained that he was rich, and so Vireo could buy nearly anything he wanted so long as it was less than five-hundred gold—dollars, money was now called dollars, and Vireo needed to work on remembering more of the words Kojata taught him.

Well, nineteen-point-nine-nine was less than five hundred, and Vireo did want different nails. He wondered if they could change his to look like a human’s. He’d tried it himself, but magic never worked on the caster.

But then, Kojata said humans didn’t have magic anymore, and Vireo had always assumed a human’s nails grew that way, so maybe—maybe he didn’t know what they would do to his nails, but Vireo would like to go and see. Or at least ask. It never—well, it seldom hurt to ask.

Going to the door of the shop, Vireo pushed it open. There was a counter a few steps in front of the door, and the room itself was full of chairs, small tables and women. There were a great many women, even though half the chairs were empty.

He usually didn’t feel the stares, but right now they were accompanied by a hard silence, and Vireo felt nervous in a way he hadn’t since the first time Kojata had kissed him.

“Hi,” he said hesitantly at the counter.

His speech seemed to break the spell, and everyone in the room returned to their idle chatter as the woman behind the counter raised an eyebrow at him. “What can I do for you, honey?” she asked. Her skin was far darker than Kojata’s, her hair was braided to look like a nest of snakes, and her long nails were bright red.

Vireo gave her a weak smile. “I saw the sign,” he said hesitantly.

“Oh yeah, honey, we’ve got a deal on manicures today, did you want one?”

“What’s a—a—manicure?” Vireo asked.

The woman looked startled at the question, but quickly covered her surprise. “We file and shape your nails, trim your cuticles and then varnish the nails,” she explained. “That’s the basic manicure, and the one that’s on sale.”

Vireo nodded.
