Jerry stood at the parapet once more. He was all alone.

Fort Baker was singed and cratered. The outer wall was little more than rubble. The beach was strewn with pieces of ruined machines. The inner wall had gaps in it where the enemy’s guns had burned through or where a piece of wrecked ship had fallen on it. The courtyard was littered with weapons and equipment. Even the citadel had taken damage. Thick black smoke poured out of a gaping wound in its side.

There were no bodies. As far as Jerry could tell, he was the only person, dead or alive, on the planet.

He looked out across the sea. A Reliant transport lay partially submerged, like some ancient shipwreck from the days of sail. A few wisps of smoke and steam drifted out from where its seams had been pulled apart in the crash.

“You did that,” said a voice.

Jerry whirled around. It was Senzon.

The old man put his hands on his hips and shook his head. “Not that it matters, though. You’re dead, so it was all for nothing.” He grunted. “Maybe the others were right. Maybe I am crazy.”

“Dead? What do you mean? How can we be having this conversation if I’m dead?”

“Your brain isn’t dead yet. It continues living for a minute or two afterwards. I’m not sure how long, exactly. I’m no doctor. But you’re dead, boy, no doubt about it. You drowned in that sewer.” He snorted. “Sea monster. What a way to go.”

Jerry looked away. A knot formed in his throat, and he blinked several times.

“Sorry, boy. I know it stinks. But we all have to die some time. Even us Masters, though some of us think otherwise.” Senzon’s lip curled with disgust. “Stupid idiots, those. Anyway, your story’s finished. Which means I was wrong about you. And I hate being wrong. It’s embarrassing.”

“Great.” Jerry inhaled deeply and then let it out slowly. It was actually sort of a relief. No more nightmares. No more War Strain. No more Blackshoals. The thought of the battle brought him back to something Senzon had said. He half-turned and jerked his thumb at the wrecked ship. “What did you mean when you said I did that?”

“You crashed that ship.”

Jerry stared, trying to decode what the man was saying.

Senzon rolled his eyes. “Breeder’s underwear. You have to have everything spelled out for you, don’t you? I guess I should use small words, too. And. Speak. Very. Slowly.”

Jerry sighed, but didn’t respond. He was getting used to Senzon’s surly attitude.

“It was your gift.” Senzon pointed at the citadel. “You were in there, remember? The battle was going poorly for your side. Lieutenant Boatwright ordered you to guard the Artifact. Remember?”

“I think so. Just bits and pieces, though. The memory’s not all there.”

“While you were in the Artifact room, you did something very stupid. I mean mind-bogglingly, head-scratchingly, belly-laughingly stupid. You touched the Artifact. When that happened, it did something to you. It synchronized itself with you and gave you your gift.
