Introduction to Folklore: Traditional Studies in Europe and Elsewhere by Ronald M. James

In spite of Olrik’s turn-of-the-century interpretation of the folktale, stressing its structure rather than its history, the discipline of folklore continued to ask historical questions. For Olrik, a set of rules that described what constrained the folktale did not exclude the possibility that these were traditional forms of oral narrative. In other words, there could be structural rules that governed the form of the folktale, which could still have a history spanning centuries if not millennia. Monographic studies of tale types continued, and hundreds of folklorists contributed to the collective knowledge of the subject.

The challenge to the generally-accepted Finnish Historic Geographic method arose, as discussed above, because questions about the origin of each type did not yield substantial or credible results. In addition, Hitler tainted the idea of a primal Indo-European “Aryan” culture. The significant nail in the coffin came with the long-forgotten work of a Soviet folklorist, published in English in 1958.

As previously described, Vladímir Propp arrived at one of the most important alternative methods to study the folktale. His 1928 Morphology of the Folktale has profoundly influenced American folklorists. This is, in part, because of Alan Dundes’s important study of American Indian folktales. Dundes (1934-2005) published his dissertation, The Morphology of North American Indian Folktales in 1964, and then went on to teach at the University of California, Berkeley. He became an extremely influential folklorist during the last four decades of the twentieth century, particularly because of his ground-breaking study of urban legends. In his study of American Indian folktales, Dundes applied Propp’s method with considerable success. It may be, however, that American Indian oral tradition allowed for more flexibility than its European counterpart. Dundes notes that it was possible to record an American folktale from a certain informant, then return years later to the storyteller, only to find many of the motifs in the same tale exchanged for others. This sort of flexibility would have been surprising in a European context.

Propp’s approach to the folktale is intriguing, clearly striking credible chords that describe the way the folktale functions. Echoing the work of Olrik, Propp outlines rules by which the folktale operates. It may be a flawed conclusion, however, to see in Propp’s ascendancy, the automatic refutation of the idea of traditional folktale types with ancient histories. Olrik’s proposal co-existed nicely with historical treatments of the folktale, and Propp’s could as well. Perhaps the major obstacle standing in the face of the Finnish method is that pursuing this approach requires a great deal of work. Modern folklore methodology as it is typically practiced in North America can be done more quickly. A monograph of a folktale type, particularly following the expansion of folklore archives throughout the world, represents a daunting task.

All of this having been said, proponents of the Finnish Historic Geographic method continue to make significant contributions to the field of folklore. More recent attempts to apply genetic theory to the study of the folktale return to biology for insight. Now, considering biology on a molecular level
