Marriage was good for Isabel. It reached in and opened her up.

Her sadness faded into a past she was finally able to let die a quiet death. Her reserve gave way to spontaneity, and she grew fond of laughing.

Anyone who saw them together could see it. Isabel and James were transfixed by one another. They shared the same dry wit. They possessed the same refined sensibility. They understood that, in their lucky case, love and sex were coincidentally one and the same. They were alike in so very many ways, Isabel took for granted that James would feel as she did about responsibility. When James’s chronic lack of responsibility was impossible to deny, Isabel had the idea that she must not say too much. In the manner she was raised, it was always better to say too little than too much. Isabel was sure James would find his way toward obligation once they had a child.

After marvel, after delight, after pride, Isabel pregnant became a woman of another purpose. It was then that she realized James’s sense of obligation would not be joining her own… not even by way of a child.

When Isabel asked, James stated unequivocally, “I have no intention of buying life insurance.”

“For God’s sake, why not?”

“It’s like betting against your own life.”

“Well, what about a will?”

“If it’s that important to you, then you do it for me.”

“I can’t draw up your will, James. You’ll need to give instructions to an attorney…. I thought Robert Gallagher.”

“Just tell him it all goes to you, along with the Willoughby estate, assuming my mother has gone. You mustn’t ever sell any part of the land. Promise me, Izzie.”

“Of course I won’t. And, if I go before you —”

“What makes you so sure you’ll be the lucky one?” interrupted James.

“No life support if something happens to me.”

“God, Isabel, what a macabre conversation.”

“I know, but it’s just something we should take care of now.”

“I’ll sign whatever you want, and we’ll never discuss it again.”

Isabel made arrangements with a friend, Robert Gallagher, who was the managing partner for a white-shoe law firm. James agreed to meet her in the law office on a weekday afternoon. Isabel, along with a lawyer from estate planning and two witnesses, waited for over an hour. Robert was told by his secretary that nothing seemed to be progressing. He got up from his desk and walked down the hall to the conference room.

“Even if James ever gets around to signing the necessary papers, God forbid the time ever comes, he’ll forget to show up at your bedside to pull the plug,” said Robert. “I suggest you designate someone else, or you’ll be hooked up to machinery for years. It’ll drain away your assets.”

“Can I appoint you?”

“It’s usually family. What about your brother?”

“He’s out in the middle of nowhere.”

“Jesus, Isabel…”

“Well, will you?”

“I guess I’ll have to, given a brother who’ll never be found… and the flaky husband,” Robert muttered.

“What I really need is a creative change,” insisted James, who didn’t wish to discuss his no-show at the law offices.
