KISS FAQ by Dale Sherman

North Charleston Coliseum, North Charleston, South Carolina, October 7, 2000

Peter Criss had rejoined the band for a five-year contract in 1995, as did Ace Frehley, with the intention of seeing where things led in the Reunion Years before deciding if anything would happen after that. For a time, especially after the dismal financial and emotional returns on the Psycho Circus tour and album for everyone involved, it appears that the band would be wrapping up things for good. Hence, what was literally called a “Farewell Tour” started in March 2000 and would continue until possibly the end of the year. This seemed a perfect way for the band to go out, with all sorts of “final concert” plans in motion that would see KISS bowing out for good in a huge show at perhaps someplace like Shea Stadium or Madison Square Garden or even a whole slew of shows at the latter venue.

And then … nothing happened. The tour was extended into October, with a final show set at the North Charleston Coliseum in South Carolina before what was referred to by Ace Frehley and Peter Criss as “the band’s final show,” and referred to by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley as the “last show before taking a few weeks off.” As the weeks grew closer, and everyone’s lawyers grew richer negotiating what was or was not to be, Criss began adding a teardrop to his makeup. Many fans took it to mean that the band really did plan to end things for good and this was his way to show it, while others wondered if perhaps he was just vying to get fans on his side for any possible contract negotiations.

Finally, October 7 came for the end of the tour. For the most part, the band would go on to perform their standard set with little indication that anything was unusual. That is until the final moments of the show. As the reunited foursome played the final notes of “Rock and Roll All Nite,” Criss began tearing apart his drum kit, smashing it to pieces.

For the moment, it was his last gesture as a KISS member before leaving—a statement of finality about his place in the band. For a while at least, he would be back for a time in 2003, but by then Ace Frehley was no longer in the band.

Since that night in October 2000, KISS has continued to perform, but never again with the original four members of the band that kicked things off back in a little club in January 1973.
