Aden’s stomach rolled as if he was reentering atmosphere instead of storming down the hall.

When he reached Oren’s room, he’d regained enough sense to realize he was walking his family home naked. He palmed open the door and strode over to Oren’s disastrous closet. Unable to tell the difference between the clean and the dirty piles o clothes, Aden grabbed the first shirt and pair of pants that showed themselves.

He glanced at the scrolling infowall. 9:43. Already thirteen minutes late to the court meeting he had scheduled downtown this morning. He had the pants up and the shirt over his head when Oren walked into the room, looking…resigned?

Oren sank onto his wide floatbed and propped his elbows on his knees. Gods, he wanted to talk, when Aden never wanted to speak of it again. He knew what his place in the relationship would be, had always known. Now he just needed to accept that Oren would soon replace him as first in Sera’s heart and find a way to be content with second place.

That would take time. Time and space.

“I should’ve spoken to you separately when I realized Sera was my potential mate,” Oren said, glancing up then down at his hands again. “I handled this poorly, I know, but you don’t have to worry about it any more. I’m not going to hunt her.”

“Don’t be stupid, Oren,” Aden laughed in disbelief. “She’s your mate. Of course you’re going to hunt and win her.” He stepped into a pair of Oren’s shoes and walked to the door. “I apologize for my behavior. Now, I’ve got to get to work.”

“Screw you.”

Aden turned, his brow furrowing. “What?”

“I said, screw you.” Oren stood, fists leveling to hips, eyes narrowing. “All that stuff you spewed back there about everyone choosing me over you is total space junk and you know it.” Oren crossed the room to stand toe to toe with Aden. “You choose who you will and will not let into your life. You’ve always cut yourself off from everyone. Even me. Even Sera. That’s why we’re in this mess. Because you wouldn’t let her in. Wouldn’t let me in. And now, when you’re faced with opening up to the two of us,—two people who love you—Aden, you wall yourself up again. Refuse to even let me back out with my pride intact.”

“Why would you back out? Sera obviously wants you.” Aden crossed his arms over his chest and shook his head. “And you were right, I knew—maybe not on a conscious level—but I knew if she met you, she’d choose you.”

“She’s chosen you, you idiotic bent,” Oren threw his hands up and began pacing. “All she’s offered me is a chance. A chance, Aden. And the offer was made out of pity, not desire. Even I could see that.” He sighed, his shoulders slumping. “I want to hunt her but not if it means harming you.”

Aden swallowed past the large lump that had formed at the base of his throat. Shame flushed his skin.
