RIVERA GLANCED AT his watch, got up from the bench, and spent a little more time wandering around the campus. When it was time to return, he walked back to the Anthropology Department, eager to see the results of the tests. He entered the Ceramics Lab and stifled a sneeze as he greeted William.

“How are the tests going?”

“I’m just about done,” said William. The two sherds were back in their plastic bags and a printer was chattering. “We’ll have the results in a minute or two. We need a new printer. This old one is a real clunker. Way too slow.”

Rivera was glad this was almost over. He enjoyed learning about the laboratory and its operations but didn’t enjoy breathing its air. As he waited for the printout, he wandered toward the rear of the lab where the younger man, whose name was Dennis, was completing the reassembly of the terra-cotta pot. He looked at the man’s work, admiring its precision.

“Where’s that pot from?” asked Rivera.

“Oh, it was made here in the lab as part of a special project. Grad students make pots, then break and reassemble them for practice. It helps them understand not only how pots were made, but also in what patterns they break into pieces. And it allows them to practice reassembly without risking actual ancient sherds. I’m doing this work to provide some good examples of proper reassembly. Reassembly is my specialty.” He pointed to a shelf above his work bench. “I did those two pots up there. The black one with the three white stripes was made, broken and reassembled here. The white one with the black markings is a genuine ancient pot.”

Rivera looked at the other two pots that Dennis had reassembled. The white pot with the black markings caught his attention immediately. There were two pieces missing from an otherwise complete pot. Rivera froze, staring in disbelief. He was speechless. Could it be?

At that moment William arrived at the back of the lab. “It looks like your two sherds were made from the same clay.” He handed the two bagged sherds and a computer printout to Rivera. “The professor can give you a more detailed interpretation of …” He stopped in mid-sentence when he saw the expression on Rivera’s face.

The deputy removed the two sherds from their bags and held them up to the reconstructed pot, confirming that they indeed matched the shapes of the missing pieces. The black markings lined up perfectly.

“I’ll be damned!” said Rivera. He turned to Dennis. “Where did you get the pieces to make this pot?”

“Frank Sorenson, one of our graduate students in anthropology, brought me the sherds last Tuesday. He said an associate of his from another university uncovered the pot at an archaeological dig. An undergraduate who was wrapping it for transport accidentally dropped it and it shattered. Frank asked me to reconstruct the pot. Said he’d pay me two hundred dollars. I told him I can always use some extra money. Did I do something wrong?”

“No, no.
