~Lucy~

Late in the summer, they got a break. Just a few days with no shows and nothing but time to relax, to tackle the laundry that always seemed to be piling up, to look over the accounting with Elliott, to catch their breaths –

To sightsee.

It was Lucy’s first time to be in California, after all. In between all the band’s activities and the time she and Jude spent with their new church, there was little time left for experiencing all that Los Angeles had to offer.

All that she really cared to experience, though, was just one place in particular.

“Disneyland?” Ace asked over breakfast that morning, making a face at her. “You want me to take you to Disneyland?”

“I didn’t say that I wanted you to take me,” she corrected him, not wanting Ace to read anything into this or to encourage his advances any more than she had unintentionally. “I said that we should all go together.”

She didn’t want to go by herself, honestly. But she wanted to go, so much so that she’d be willing to go alone if she couldn’t get these guys on board. So far it looked as though they would be perfectly content to sit around and do nothing for the next few days.

Maybe she could talk them into it.

“I was thinking,” she said, “that I could get some really great pictures in the park for publicity.”

That was reaching, but she eyed them hopefully.

“I think there would be some copyright infringements on those types of pictures,” Elliott said thoughtfully. “Even mentioning Disney or any of its related companies in any kind of artistic endeavor without the express permission of the company is like opening yourself up to all kinds of legal problems.”

Lucy refrained from rolling her eyes. “Well, it’s not like you guys are huge yet or anything,” she said. “I don’t think Disney will catch wind of it.”

“Bigger than we were,” Miles said. “We practically got mobbed last night after the show.”

They’d stopped at a burger joint to pick up some food before heading back to the house. Lucy had been ready to protest this, thinking of the money they could save if they didn’t, but she’d kept from saying anything when Jude had taken her hand in his and pulled her out of the van with a smile.

“Let them have their fun, ne?” he’d whispered close to her ear, as he’d held her hand and pulled her to his side, draping his arm over her shoulders.

She’d been too distracted by his proximity to keep protesting. Jude was good to be her friend, to keep it painfully platonic as they went about their lives the majority of the time, taking her to church and out afterwards, to their small group during the week, always treating her like a sister in Christ and nothing more.

But after these shows, there was this look in his eyes, this closeness between them that she wasn’t sure whether to encourage or not.

Her mother’s words about guarding her heart would come back to her, along with the words that she’d added to it…

For now.
