Listeners Upon the Defeated Queen’s Jetty

(AD 69 – Year of Four Emperors)

Commius, Marcus and Crixus all sat captivated by the mature Brigante Highness’ tale. She must have been in her early forties, but she was still slim. Each imagined her with full, raven-black hair and could sense that she was once a very beautiful lady. Even in her forties she could bewitch a man – she retained her feminine elegance, yet they could also see she could be strong minded and ruthless. How else would a sovereign have been able to rule for so long? Her white skin and bright blue eyes, against her once raven hair, would have been enough to capture any man’s attention. Even with the greying of age she had a ripened beauty that captivated the young Roman soldiers. They were in awe of her, mystified by her barbaric splendour.

“So, Highness of Brigante,” began Commius, “You have reigned during the time of the Catuvellauni chieftain Caractacus and his campaigns, then that of Queen Boudicca of Iceni.”

She turned smiling to the Atrebate standard bearer. “I’ve seen the reign of Claudius and Nero and, within a year, three more Roman emperors. There might even be a fourth before the year is out, if Vespasian has his way. He was once a young commander of the Roman second Legion, I have been told, and also that he saw action and fought in Britain during the time of Emperor Claudius.”

“This is so, Highness. Vespasian led the campaign against the Durotriges and commanded the siege at their great Fort of Mai Dun,” Commius replied.

Cartimandua frowned and nodded her head. “If he does become emperor, I’m sure Venutius will be unable to withstand Roman siege weapons. I’m told Mai Dun was more formidable even than my Brigante High Fort, and Vespasian learnt his trade well in Rome’s vast and capable army.”

Commius agreed. “Indeed he did, Highest of Brigante. So many emperors in a year. It might become the year of four emperors yet. You must have lived a very dramatic life and seen many changes throughout your land. But this present cataclysm of events must be one of the most significant of all.”

“Oh, I did live through great change, and there were testing times and very fine ones, but the memory of Boudicca will always haunt me – even more than this latest upheaval that sees me cast from my realm. I’m weary of trying to protect the Brigante. I fear there is no hope for the many tribes of my vanquished regime, after this final antic of Venutius. He should have been careful of what he wished for and vigorously pursued it to a conclusion. But the stones of fate have been cast, and the inevitability of Rome will come upon him and the poor Brigante. The nation now seems set on sleepwalking to its destruction.”

Commius was confused. “You count the meeting with Boudicca as being of greater significance than losing your realm, Highness?”

“Of course, Commius. I had my Brigante dominion at this time and these were my best days.
