Chapter 8

Settling In

“You ready, kid?” Sunny asks as he walks into the hospital room. I was released a few days ago, but they wanted the NICU to observe Lyric for a little while. She was a bit premature, and the doctor was worried she would need extra help. She proved them all wrong. She’s nursing well and has the strongest lungs I’ve heard on a baby.

Chapter 8

Sunny came to collect us from the hospital. Dr. Peterson has insisted that I not drive for a few more weeks. He says I need to build my strength back up from the delivery.

“Almost. Let me put a hat on her head,” I tell him.

“Okay. I’m going to see if there’s anything else for us to sign. You good?”

I nod. “Stop making a fuss and get to hauling.”

Sunny laughs and leaves us to finish getting ready. I’m still fussing over her hair and putting her tiny hat on just right. She has a cowlick of hair that swooshes across her forehead in the sweetest way. But it is a pain in my ass to get it tucked under the little hat.

I plant kisses on her chubby little baby belly before putting a pair of pink socks on her feet. Late March is already hotter than I remember any other year being. Still, it could be cool enough to give her a chill. I stare at her sweet, sleeping face and think of Ryan. He would be crazy about her.

Without warning, I think of Clayton. He’d be crazy about her, too. He was crazy about her when I kicked him out of the delivery room. A pain strikes my heart, and I know I did the wrong thing. It was emotional and not thought out. Then a feeling of guilt washes over me. We were getting really close when I went crazy bitch on him. “What’s wrong with me?” I ask aloud.

I’m startled when Dr. Peterson says, “I wondered when you were going to get around to beating yourself up about kicking that boy out.”

I groan. “Clarity is a bitch.”

He laughs. “That, my dear, is an understatement. Good thing we get second chances. And third chances. And…”

“I get it. I didn’t expect to see you today. Lyric just got released.”

“I heard. Dr. Luz is an old friend of mine. Since you’re here, I wanted to come by and see how you’re feeling.”

I shrug. “Other than like a fool? I’m good. Sometimes I feel like a deflated balloon. I’m ready to start working out and get the weight off, but I know, I have to wait another few weeks.”

He nods. “Okay. Sounds like you’re thinking clearly. Give that boy a call, will you?”

“Doctor’s orders?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

*****

We arrive home and find Anna, Irma, and Jess sitting on the front porch. I can’t help the smile that spreads across my face. “Look, Lyric, the welcoming committee is here to greet you.”

Sunny groans. “That’s too much for me today. Anna has her car. I’m going to the bar.”

Laughing, I tell him, “I’ll send Jess your way shortly.
