CHAPTER 13

Everything must have its roots, and the tendrils

work quietly underground.

The Tao Te Ching [circa 600 – 400 BCE]

I began the new week by writing the first draft of my article on Akira Duncan. I knew it would go through at least one major change after the photo shoots of his restaurant and school. Looking at the menus from the former, and the course descriptions of the latter, I knew what images I wanted to accompany my text. Obviously, I couldn’t include quotes from Keoni or me, but with Evelyn and Jim Souza being retired restaurateurs, their observations would be ideal.

While sipping cinnamon sun tea at lunch, Keoni glanced through the three pages of the first draft of my article. “Looks good, honey. You even mentioned my favorite appetizer—crab cakes with green onion on a bed of locally grown watercress. I sure wish Akira would open a restaurant on this side of the island.”

“I agree. I’m glad you like the piece,” I responded, wondering if Akira’s recipe for the crab cakes was included in the appetizer course at his school.

“I know you’ve been working with your stash of alahe`e wood while waiting for the appointment with your new clients on the North Shore. If you aren’t meeting with them for a few days, I wondered if you’d like to help me check out the furniture Bō said he sold to an antique shop. I’m hoping to find a piece or two that matches what I saw in my vision.”

“No problem, Natalie. I’ve got about a week until my next appointment. Once I evaluate their needs, I may be locked in for a few days. Until that time, my schedule is clear.”

In the morning, we set off in Keoni’s truck, in case I found something that would be a great addition to the cottage. Memories Antiques was a delightful place and I enjoyed every moment we spent there. While Keoni strolled through the store’s stock of antique koa furnishings, I approached the owner. She told me that she had not yet prepped the furniture from the old Shēn Hotel, but if I wanted to see it, I could check out the warehouse across the back parking lot. I waived at my partner and exited through the back door.

I have never minded a bit of dust when I am on the hunt for a bargain…or a key to an incomplete article. At the moment, I did not know if I was more interested in an acquisition for the cottage, or a clue that would solve the mystery of the man who had died in that narrow hotel hallway so many years ago. Wandering through the cluttered space, I found a number of furnishings that would complement the style of my Auntie Carries’ home.

Eventually, I spotted a corner stacked with odds and ends that looked like what I had seen in the hotel’s elevator. I located the mahogany drop-leaf desk I had seen in my vision of Room 312 covered with shabby silk lampshades and stained lace doilies.
