Chapter 21

WHAT THE HELL are you doing?

The truth was, he had no idea.

But keeping Veronica in a dungeon somewhere, or locked up in her room seemed pointless. He wasn’t going to play games with her like his brother would’ve done. Hell, he still had no clue what he was going to do about her.

The only thing he was sure of was that she was going to die no matter what. It was just a matter of when and where and who, not if. And if he could make her last days a little bit more bearable, he was going to do it.

Oh yeah, she’s going to totally appreciate that. And do you really have to keep her here? You know how she makes you feel.

You’re going to make a mistake.

Get yourself in deeper.

An image of Veronica, naked, flashed back into his mind. Did she have to be so damn gorgeous? He would love to press his lips to those perfect breasts, to kiss her stomach, to bury his head between her legs and…

Don’t go there.

His cock was already twitching at the idea, and it was something he couldn’t allow. If only she hadn’t come out of that bathroom like that, all confident, as if she’d never been a prisoner.

Her eyes, though, held a darkness that hadn’t been there before, and he had his brother to thank for that. Was it forever going to stay there, or would she recover?

She’s going to die before she gets a chance. You know that, so snap out of it.

He was just about to pick up his glass of wine when Veronica showed up in the doorway, and he had no idea how he managed to keep the glass in his hand. He shouldn’t have picked out the purple gown that hugged her body in the sexiest way possible, revealing just enough to drive him crazy.

It had been one of the gowns his brother had bought, and Aiden wished he’d gone out to buy something else. Maybe a pair of jeans or a shirt. Except that wouldn’t have helped, because whatever she was in wouldn’t have changed the way she was holding herself.

Her chin was up as she strode toward the table, as if she was truly a guest at some royal dinner, and not a captive.

Her lips pulled into a small smile as she took a seat at the table right next to him, ignoring the plate that had been set across from him. Her proximity was unnerving, but surely, he wasn’t going to show her just how much she affected him.

There was a slight puffiness around her eyes.

She’d been crying.

His teeth clenched together. His brother should be glad that he wasn’t here, because Aiden would’ve punched him right now if he could.

“Am I late?” she asked, and he shook his head.

As he waved over the servants, who immediately hurried to serve the food, he decided to look everywhere but at her. He couldn’t escape her gaze, though, not even when she brought the fork to her lips.
