“Glad shall I beer with Asar

in the high-seat drink.

Gone are life’s moments;

smiling shall I die.”[420]

11. ROLLO THE PIRATE, c. 860–933

Rollo, son of a renowned Viking chief, spent most of his life plundering in England, Friesland, and France. He was best known for his acquisition of Normandy in northwestern France, which he sealed in 911 by the Treaty of St. Clair-sur-Epte with the Frankish king Charles the Simple.[421]

The raid on Lindisfarne Monastery on Holy Island in 793 is the customary marker for the start of the Viking Age. After Lindisfarne, Vikings sacked cities and towns along all the major coastlines and rivers of England and France, which eventually led them to the shores of the area that is today called Normandy. Raiding parties arrived in Normandy directly from the Nordic countries or came across the English Channel from Viking settlements in England, Scotland, and Ireland. Since Normandy’s location in northwestern France required only a short hop across the water from England, the Franks were on constant alert against Viking attacks on their lucrative empire. Piracy and plunder of these dominions continued in the ninth and tenth centuries, starving the Frankish people and completely destroying the country, until the king grew resigned to giving up part of his land and entered into a peace treaty with the notorious Viking chief, Rollo.

Rollo’s true origins are sketchy. According to Scandinavian lore, he was the son of the mighty Norwegian Earl Ragnvald of Möre, who lived during the reign of Harald Fairhair.[422] Dudo of St. Quentin,[423] a historian of the first dukes of Normandy, claims that an old “man who never lowered the nape of his neck before any king, nor placed his hands in anyone else’s hands in committing himself to service,” lived in the region of Dacia (mainly modern Romania and Moldova, but also parts of Hungary, Bulgaria, and Ukraine; although, Dudo describes it as Denmark), surrounded by many warriors. This powerful, arrogant man took possession of a large area of land and subjugated people to his rule through countless battles. He was known for his superior strength and many virtues. When he died, he left “two sons vigorous in arms, well-versed in warfare, in body most fair, in spirit most hardy.” The elder brother was called Rollo, and the younger Gurim.[424]

Earl Ragnvald was an entrusted ally of King Harald Fairhair. The relations between the two men were close, especially during the time that Harald was struggling to bring all of Norway under his command. The earl won the king’s favor and enjoyed his privileged lot. After the earl died, the leading men of his territory began to capture towns and encampments in an attempt to avenge the wrongs inflicted on them. Many of Rollo’s men were killed in the conflicts. Among the fallen was his brother Gurim. Rollo, himself, was forced to retreat with six ships to Scania (today’s southern Sweden), where he lingered for some time depressed, until he pulled himself together and outfitted his ships for an extended journey to England.
