Chapter Seven

“Who is that?” Trent asked.

His voice sounded casual but Melissa could tell that his intention was anything but! She stared at the small screen in dismay.

“I don’t know.”

Her heart sank. She hadn’t gone this far when looking at her photographs before. The fact that she didn’t know the man had very little to do with the question. It was more a question of why were they in such an intimate pose!

“I’m sorry, Trent. I seem to have behaved very badly. I don’t know what to say.”

Trent stared grimly at the two smiling faces on the photograph.

“It’s no use pretending I’m not upset by it, Melissa. I am. No wonder you stayed an extra week! Have you no memory of him at all?”

Melissa shook her head.

“None at all. It’s as if I’ve never seen him before—but the photographs prove that I have. I’m sorry.”

She felt terrible. Whether it had been a light-hearted holiday romance or something more serious, she had no idea! She looked relaxed and happy on the photographs and no-one had forced her to be there! The photographs revealed her fickleness. She had betrayed Trent’s trust of her!

Trent took hold of both of her hands.

“How do you feel when you look at the photographs?” he asked gently … far more gently than Melissa felt she would have asked the question!

“Bewildered,” she replied honestly. “I can’t imagine why I did this! I care too much about you! Was I swept off my feet by him?” She shook her head. “I must have been out of my mind!”

“I suppose I should draw comfort from the fact that you left him behind and came back to me!” Trent said with forced lightness. “As long as you aren’t planning to rush back to him?”

Melissa grimaced.

“I wouldn’t even know where to find him … and I certainly don’t want to!” She studied the photograph again, looking in vain for some hint that they were just part of a group relaxing together. They were far too close, intimate even. “Why was I on holiday without you?” she asked Trent. “Had we had a row or something?”

“No, not really. And, regardless of how it appears from those,” pointing at the snaps, “you weren’t there on holiday. You were attending an international convention of wine merchants, supposedly searching out new business and extending your own contacts.”

“I seem to have done that!” she said ruefully, “the latter part, anyway.” She was immediately contrite for her light-heartedness. “I’m sorry. It’s no joking matter.” Her mind sobered. “What do you want me to do?”

“In what way?”

“Do you want me to leave?”

“No, of course not. I think we should keep the arrangement as it is though, until you are more sure of your feelings.” His right eyebrow rose a fraction as he gave a short, humourless laugh. “You might recover your memory and remember that you came back to finish with me!”

Melissa doubted that very much! She had fallen very much in love with him and just wanted the nightmare to be over so that they could resume their relationship .
