Over The Frontier (VMC) by Stevie Smith

Long happy hours of summertime, oh darling Tilssen of those long August days, empty of all significance but the minute upon the minute, how happy I was then, how spendthrift of these happy minutes, with no thought but for that present time, freed for once of the tyranny of ideas, indeed it was to be born again into the careless heritage of the once born, with no otherway thought to come with wracking twisting and tormenting malice. For Josephine, Haidee, Reine and me, it was to be completely free, in a firm light friendship, not emotionally held at all, but carelessly, lightly, in the friendship of a happy schoolday. All summer in a schoolday that has this to point the moral, that you are let out from school on a whole day’s exeat to keep the head mistress’s birthday, it may be, or the death of a governing bishop. And so with a sorrowful or a happy face, made up to suit the occasion, you run away to take out the boat, to swim, ride or picnic, and the face that left the school chapel with all of the official occasion writ up upon it, soon can tell another story, of happiness in freedom, of unconscious happiness.

But no Pompey of this world can long be so quiet and docile but must turn round upon herself and her darling little friends to make trouble and disturbance. So now for me my morning rides with Tom became of increasing importance. And if with Josephine and Haidée the years fell away from me and I re-experienced something of a happy childhood, with Tom it was quite entirely different altogether. I watched him closely and he watched me closely, on these morning rides we were a little wary of each other. To begin with I was quite infatuated with his really splendid appearance, I could not tell if he was very intelligent or not, nor did I care, being by this time a little shy of intelligence and prepared to jettison all such dotty ideas in the full appreciation of this beautiful Tom boy. His conversation was not, dear Reader, the sort of thing that clever people like us can cope with for long. But might it not be a concealing stupidity, deliberately adopted for some purpose? It lacked the engaging candour of bone-stupidity, but as I had at that time no key to his motive for adopting any thought-mask of any sort, I let it go, I let it go and became so completely and childishly infatuated by this grand form and feature of Tom-Tom that I cared very little what was in his mind.

This morning we rode up to the fort again. He is very devoted to this ride. We go up the hill past the church and up and up, and striking off through the pine woods we come after two hours’ riding to this aged fort that has the guns still set in it, rusty and of a very ancient vintage, I should suppose, and bearing the encouraging name of a well known English firm.
