Plastic Jesus by Wayne Simmons

Billy lived in Koy Town, forty miles south of Lark City centre. Once bandit territory, gasheads used to roam Koy’s dirt roads, preying upon any vehicles stupid enough to venture too far south on their own.

But the natives weren’t as restless as they used to be.

There was an oil well somewhere round these parts. The gasheads refined it, exporting gasoline on the black market. Word had it McBride had won the whole damn lot in a card game. And it seemed to Billy like he had won the gasheads’ trust too, taming the locals to the point where the old place became less of a hellhole, and, dare he say it, more habitable.

Few people actually lived here, though.

McBride’s place sat on the main road. It was once a busy throughway into Lark, back when fossil fuels were all the rage. Now it was just another dirt track.

McBride still traded a lot of fuel tech, dealing out of an old garage at the side of his gaff. There were always gasheads hanging around, revving their bikes and pinstriped hotrods, stripping engines and bodywork, but they gave no trouble.

Billy’s place sat right across the road.

At fifty two, the security man was still single. He had never really dated much in his life. Led a simple life, getting the hydrosteam train into town, working twelve hour shifts, six days a week, plonked behind the monitors of Alt Lark.

On his one day off, Billy would stay in Koy. He liked the seafront, taking brisk walks along the beach, looking out on the line of solar pyramids circling Maal. Those things had always fascinated him.

He remembered back when he was a kid, holidaying with his folks down on the south western part of the island, where the sun shone brightest and the pyramids seemed to glow on the horizon like precious stones.

Pop was a tech guy, working the power plant all his life. He would explain the whole process to Billy, how the sun would provide energy in two ways. First, heating the glass panels to give solar. Then boiling the water beneath, feeding an endless supply of steam through m5 coil, the compressed air either stored in pods, for use in hydro powered tech, or connected to turbines, supplying heat or electricity.

The old man was a firm believer in renewable power, heartily signed up to Alt’s manifesto.

‘To think there wuz days when all folks burned were fossils,’ he would say, cigarette dangling from his lips, one callused hand pointing out the sea or the sky, ‘when Ol’ Lady Nature had all this on tap.’

Further along the shore, Billy would meet the wind farms, their tall lithe rods stretching high in the air, seducing the boisterous sea air, powering their own turbines. But Pop didn’t rate them.

‘You’re either a sun guy or a wind guy,’ he used to tell Billy. ‘And wind guys are always trouble.’
