CHAPTER TWENTY

She ducked under the Stegosaurus’s tail, and then dove into a small patch of brush. Immediately getting to her knees, she surveyed the area, spotted what had nearly blindsided her, and then rose to her feet, prepared to dodge the next attack. The ground shook, and Jill spotted several more lumbering beasts as they entered the pathway. They were traveling in a small herd. Absentmindedly, she had walked directly into them.

She turned back and looked for Phil and Carla. They were both gone, swallowed up by the jungle. She assumed they had bolted at the first sign of trouble. Probably halfway back toward the temple by now.

Assholes, she thought, patting her hip, making sure she still had at least one of her weapons. The 9mm was still there, resting against her waist.

“Hey,” she heard someone whisper behind her.

She turned and saw two faces peeking through the brush, arms that waved her on.

“Come on,” Phil said, eyeing the half dozen Stegosauruses. He seemed reluctant to move and with good reason—the plated dinosaurs had been ultra-aggressive, attacking Jill with zero hesitation. The slightest movement might have made them veer from their path, charge newfound threats. “Hurry,” he said, keeping his voice low.

She backed away, also keeping her eyes on the pack. They continued to lumber along, swaying back and forth, the plates that ran down their spines moving in wavelike fashion along with the rhythm of their gait. To Jill, they looked magnificent. They wore a shimmering scaly skin, sans the feathery attributes of the other dinosaurs, the carnivores with sharp teeth and the personality of a Doberman with rabies. The color of their skin was rainbow-like, changing depending on which way the cones of light beamed through the trees.

The herd moved on, eventually disappearing in the distance, concealed by the overgrowth the dense jungle had to offer.

Jill turned to her companions. “Holy shitballs, did you see how close that thing came to taking my head off?” She pretended her flat hand was the dinosaur’s tail and reenacted the event, making a whooshing noise as her palm glided over her head. “A few more inches and I would have been decapitated.”

Carla muttered something that sounded a lot like “well, you’re already brainless, so what’s the difference?”

Jill wanted to grab her by the throat, but Phil shot her a look that said, please don’t. It took all of her available strength, but she refrained from marching over there and smacking the woman.

“What’s next?” Jill asked, surveying the jungle. In the near distance, birds squawked to each other, trading prehistoric secrets. Or at least she hoped it was birds and not those other dinosaurs, the ones with the hooked claws on their feet, teeth like a circular saw blade. She hoped she could make it the rest of the way home without running into them again.

As Jill waited for one of her new friends to respond, she thought this world was much more dangerous than the one she’d come from. What had happened on Sharkwater Beach was nothing compared to the dangers of this place.
