“Yes?”

Sam decided to change the subject.

“Why the hurry? And what’s with the basket of fruit? Rosie’s seems more like a frijoles-and-tortilla place.”

“Yes?”

Sam decided to change the subject.

“Why the hurry? And what’s with the basket of fruit? Rosie’s seems more like a frijoles-and-tortilla place.”

“It’s for the dinner. Surely you know about it? There’s an important official from Mexico going to meet with Colonel Leeds and those two federal officials.”

“Important official? You must mean Del-gado. I’d probably call him a two-bit crook . . . but I’m not a diplomat.”

“Yes. Raul Delgado. Colonel Leeds will conduct a dinner for him. Rosie will take care of the arrangements and I am helping Rosie. The colonel has a dining room he uses for such occasions. That is where I am headed now. Would you join me?”

“If I could have a favor.”

Mary smiled and said, “Name it.”

“Allow me to assist you with your load.”

The two walked in the sunshine. Sam carried the basket easily in his left arm. His right hand kept trying to put itself around Mary’s slim shoulder, and she did not push it away.

“No, Sam, you are not shy,” she said. “Not shy at all!”

“Do you object?”

“Of course not! I meet lots of men in my job at Rosie’s, but few of them hold any interest for me. They tend to be loud and crude cowboys, soldiers, buffalo hunters. Some of them are quite wealthy. Some are handsome. A few are even nice. But I don’t want to go away with them, not even for a night.”

“So why’d you single me out?”

“There is something about you that is different . . . something that sets you apart from other men. You interested me. But I suppose to you I’m just another saloon girl.”

Sam winced, remembering the words he had used when he first met Mary.

“I apologize for being so harsh,” Sam said. “It was thoughtless of me.”

Mary looked at him through half-closed eyes. “I’m not mad about it. What you said is true. I’m not much more than a barmaid, though I’d like to be more. I’d like to find a good man and live on a ranch. I’d like to have the family I never had. Rosie took me in when I was just a girl, gave me a place to live and a job to do. She was kind to me, good to me. But I would like to have a family of my own and a home of my own. Though I will not settle for a man I do not love.”

“I definitely owe you an apology,” Sam said. “Will you accept my apology?”

Mary nodded her head.

The walk went much too quickly.

“Here is the dining hall,” Mary said. “Why not step inside and look at the arrangements?”

Sam was stunned when he stepped through the door. Tables were set up covered with spotless white cloths. The chairs were polished wood. Shiny glasses and silverware were on the table. It was as nice as many of the dinner parties he had attended while attending the eastern university.

Leeds and Rosie were talking between themselves in the far corner of the room.

”Sam!” Leeds called out.
