Secrets of the code : the unauthorized guide to the mysteries behind the Da Vinci code by Burstein Daniel

3) Was each alleged grand master in any way connected with Rennes-le-Chateau, Gisors, Stenay, Saint Sulpice, or any of the other sites that had recurred in the course of our previous investigation?

4) If Sion defined itself as a “Hermetic Freemasonry,” did each alleged grand master display a predisposition toward Hermetic thought or an involvement with secret societies?

Although information on the alleged grand masters before 1400 was difficult, sometimes impossible to obtain, our investigation of the later figures produced some astonishing results and consistency. Many of them were associated, in one way or another, with one or more of the sites that seemed to be relevant— Rennes-le-Chateau, Gisors, Stenay, or Saint Sulpice. Most of the names on the list were either allied by blood to the house of Lorraine or associated with it in some other fashion; even Robert Fludd, for example, served as tutor to the sons of Henry of Lorraine. From Nicolas Flamel on, every name on the list, without exception, was steeped in Hermetic thought and often also associated with secret societies—even men whom one would not readily associate with such things, like Boyle and Newton. And with only one exception each alleged grand master had some contact—sometimes direct, sometimes through close mutual friends—with those who preceded and succeeded him….

Opus Dei in the United States

By James Martin, S.J.

James Martin, S.J., is an associate editor at the Catholic magazine, America, and a priest at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Manhattan. “Opus Dei in the United Slates” by James Martm, S.J. was originally published in America on Feb. 25, 1995. Although written almost a decade ago, his article remains one of best and most balanced treatments of Opus Dei, the organization which Silas, the albino monk/ assassin in The Da Vinci Code, belongs. Martin’s article is eye opening. Copyright © 1995 by America Press. All rights reserved. For subscription information, visit www.americamagazine.org.

Opus Dei is the most controversial group in the Catholic Church today. To its members it is nothing less than The Work of God, the inspiration of Blessed Josemaria Escriva, who advanced the work of Christ by promoting the sanctity of everyday life. To its critics it is a powerful, even dangerous, cultlike organization that uses secrecy and manipulation to advance its agenda. At the same time, many Catholics admit knowing little about this influential group.
